Hi QLD Seabreeze'zers

im travelling up to and through QLD from NSW staying in Gold Coast for a while end of June/July before travelling up to Cairns. I'm a keen windsurfer into Slalom and wave. What are the go to spots firstly for wave sailing, then secondly for Flatish water? Hoping to hear back and bump and jump into a few of you.

go to waves is currumbin or flat rock in northern nsw. sunny coast is neil st in a se and caloundra bar in westerly wind.


flat water on goldy is parklands or shearwater esplanade. when you get to the goldy swing by surf fx and talk to the guys. they know the best spots amd sail them regularly.

in a westerly at that time of year wellington point near brisbane gets a lot of use.

post in the qld forum once you arrive. plenty of excellent spots to sail.

heads up that it pumps in north qld during winter. 20-30 SE for days. hopefully others will provide more detail about cairns.

When you're up on cairns if there is a SE getting over to Green Island is a must. On the way north Bowen is often ripping and it has several sailing sites, and Rowes Bay in Townsville can be good. Personally I love sailing from Magnetic island which often picks up more of the SE than Townsville. If you have limited time Bowen and Green are great options, but there are lots of sailing sites on that trip north. That time of year stingers aren't an issue, the water is warm and air is about 25 degrees, so it can be pretty good!

do you have any thoughts on timing. the op was on the gold coast june/july.

whats the timing for mid/morth qld. do the SE winds stop in august

A good flat water/ b&j spot in Mackay is Illawong Beach. Best in a SE'ly. Wind is pretty consistent when we get a HPS moving across the GA bight. GB reef prevents any decent waves here. Big tide movement but can get 2hrs either side of high.

Another really good spot in a decent SE'ly is Cape Gloucester. It's a bit off the beaten track though. I've only sailed it a couple of times when on holidays staying at Montes Reef Resort which is right on the beach. Extremely beautiful location. It's 35 mins off the Bruce Highway about 10 mins north of Proserpine. Follow the signs to Hydeaway Bay and keep going on the dirt road another 3k's. SE'ly funnels through the passage between Montes and Gloucester Island and the water stays very flat, ideal for slalom.

Thx guys, this is so helpful! Yes when I get closer to location, will definitely ask the locals and check these spots out if conditions suit. Yes I heard Green Island is a must, looking forward and fingers crossed wind is around.

Is currumbin - Kirra beach?
Kirra is number 1, so good!

no currumbin is its own spot further north and a point break

kirra gets kiters in a northerly wind and is more a beach break depending on sand movements.
in a se swell it operates like a point and in a wind shadow in a se wind.

s -se wind you could try duranbah. light launch but full wind out the back.

im staying at Jacobs creek atm and have surfed Shearwater Park and sailed down near grand hotel, was fun but really inconsistent with the southerly - wasn't keeping my hopes up. Now wind has turned more east and was thinking maybe around Moreton island but unsure where? Any brisbane'ers know of flat water spots suited to ESE conditions?

Hey Mitchy, if you're on the northside of Brisbane try Oxley Place at Sandstone Point in the SE. It's very tide dependent, but tides will be ok by wednesday. South Esplanade Bongaree on Bribie Island will be ok for all tides in SE except dead low but if there's a lot of east it's sketchy getting back in. If you head further north, Golden Beach at Caloundra is ok for all tides in SE but not as much room to move as Sandstone/Bribie. Best of luck tracking down accommodation in school holidays
