I will be moving to Brisbane next month to work in Kelvin Grove. Our family is looking to move to either Manly/ Wynnum or to the Sandgate area. I have 2 kids, and my eldest is 10 and has just started to windsurf. If anyone here lives in either location and has kids, I would love to know what you think of these respective areas. I am also keen to find out how long it 'actually' would take to drive to Kelvin Grove during peak times from either location. Thank you in advance!

Both trips approx 30min with light traffic. Sandgate from KG is prob an easier trip & no tolls.

From Brighton it takes me 20 minutes in the morning 6am to get to Bowen Hills along the Gateway and then KG is no more than 10 minutes past that with no tolls. Getting back home will take a little longer in the afternoons as the Gateway has traffic and Sandgate or Gympie roads will be quicker, allow 40min from KG to Sandgate.
Which is a better area for living will be debatable especially with kids. Those on the Northside will say its better and those on the South will say its better. I moved to Brighton 30 years ago as it was one of the few places I found I could live in Brisbane and windsurf out front of my house, my photo is taken from my living room while kiting. I think both areas are similar but I like more open water with chop and Sandgate to Redcliffe offer that in a short drive. But really both areas offer similar benefits.

saturday mornings at RQYS manly is organised to support kids windsurfing

We drive my son down every Saturday morning. Takes an hour from much further Northside.

Parents who have kids in manly area get more available sessions mid week

as kids grow the manly local children take pushbike to Rqys and go out as an arfternoon group as boards are stored on site

depending on plans for you children's windsurf fun Manly location may allow them to be more independent windsurfers as they get older

The shortest commutes are about 30 minutes from both locations and both have tolls. Add 10 minutes for a no toll option.
Sailing wise, it depends on you type of sailing. For GPS sailing, course racing, beginners then Wynnum / Manly / Wellington Pt is better. For bump and jump, either location is good.

Sandgate is perfect for kiting, but it's not ideal for windsurfing in my opinion. It's shallow for a long way.

Manly/Wynnum/Wellington Point is the go for windsurfing. Like others have mentioned, there's a sailing club in Manly, which would be great for kids.

Manly to Kelvin Grove is really easy by train (with a walk or a bus at the other end) with express ones at rush hour time.
