There have been lots of mast breakages over the last 12 months. Just wondering if anyone has broken an Ezzy RDM or any other RDM mast? I have Ezzy RDM's and they seem thick & strong compared to the SDM's I used to have.

I think RDMs across the board are pretty reliable. I've not broken any of my powerexs or severne RDMs. That said people have broken them, but usually it's doing retarded things in heavy shorebreaks.

Not sure what breakages you are talking about but they are probably SDMs.

You can also buy tops and bottoms separately for ezzy's, so breaks are a bit cheaper

given enough of a hiding anything will eventually break, there is no way around it.

In saying that i used to break a SDM mast about once a season, I have never broken a RDM since moving scross to using them about 8 years ago.

Jeff for your weight rdms are the way to go for sure and they are more resistant to breaking.

Jeff I bought my Ezzys especially for sailing off Queens because I felt they would be the most breakage resistant. They can be broken (anything can) but it's rare. Ezzy do say however that it's best to use the supplied nolimitz shim instead of the inserts that are supplied with a lot of the newer booms. Do that and I'd say you can forget about mast breakage until you get into landing back loops.

I used to break about one or two masts a season until I went to RDMs about 6 years ago, Ezzy by coincidence. I have only broken one mast since, an ezzy RDM, but it was in a retardedly massive shore-break and I broke it about 1m from the tip, which for a mast breakage is extremely rare, highlighting the 'anything would break' circumstance of the impact. But yeah i've put RDMs through ridiculous workouts and apart from that one incident they have always come through, much much stronger than an SDM for sure.

If that means that your masts, guys are broken in most cases by wave and water power - not by wind pressure ?
I broke my few masts on the wind only but that were very very well used masts and time could make a dent too.
But I am going for wave sailing very soon, and I am excited but my only concern is this accidental mast breakage
My plan is to use my standard gear 430 cm 30% carbon and 5.7 m2 sail , 92 L board 20-25 knots wind.
If that means that I am likely to loose my mast in first attempt ??

Jeff I've broken a few SDM's over the years, got sick of swimming in so got myself an Ezzy RDM, had it now for about 8 years and was my only mast for 3 sails sizes until this year when I got a Loft RDM. The Ezzy mast worked well with my Loft's, fingers crossed for the new RDM.

Mate has broken 5 SDM's this year same conditions, you work it out www.gpsteamchallenge.com.au/sailor_session/show?date=2012-10-20&team=20
