Opinions for location of stay for early January 2013 - please.

My son will be at the Australian Jamboree at Maryborough in January 2013. So I'm after somewhere realatively nearby to stay as I'm planning to go and visit him at the Jamboree, 2hrs or so is fine as I will be driving up from Sydney.
At the same time I would like to make it a laid back flat water Windsurfing holiday. So I'm after some opinions on the areas that will offer the best flatwater windsurfing anywhere between Cootharaba-Burrum-Urangan. It would have to be a house as appartments and the like don't really offer anywhere to store my gear.

So if anybody can give some advice on the best location to stay it would be much appreciated.

Oh BTW wifey has to be happy too and Hervey Bay looks real pretty.

Cootharaba would be a good spot, not sure of the rental situation but i'm sure there'll be a few.

Harvey Bay is only about 25k from Maryborough with heaps of accom facilities and lots for the Mrs to do. It is a good spot for both flat water and wave sailing in the right conditions. I sailed there years ago with a good SE near the Pier. I would imagine it would be good also in a N or NE. Apparently there are a few locals who frequent the area who would probably respond if you posted a thread with Harvey Bay in the title.
Also as posted above Lake Cootharaba is great in just about anything apart from a westerly direction (thats my opinion). But lacks interest for the Mrs, sometimes referred to as Boreen Point, mine called it Boring Point!!!
For a family spot with entertainment I'd probably pick H/Bay.

I agree with Gregw , though your only about a 1/2 hour to Noosa from Boreen Point which could keep the Missus happy . But if your boy will be at the Jamborie in Maryborough I would stay in Hervey bay the only down side to the BAy is the mud flats on a low tide . And do a day trip to Burrum

i've sailed all the spots listed and i'd lean towards burrum heads.... but need more info really of what the mrs is looking for.

burrum is picteresque, quiet and humble. very relaxing. plenty of houses to rent through elders realty burrum heads.

short walk to the water, clear water and sand beach. (unless it's been raining non stop then the water gets dirty). although most go there for low tide blasting along the 4+ km speed bank i think it is best at high tide.

you could maybe stay in burrum, wife could drive to hervey bay for shopping and you can sail at burrum. it's the type of place where you park the car and walk everywhere.

Davmen, I'm a Hervey Bay local and January is most likely to deliver a south-easterly, which is "flat water" at low tide when sailing from Urangan. You can check some of the tracks of the 'Burrum Heads MOB' on GPS Team Challenge for more details. Burrum Heads is also a good option at low tide and only about 30 mins from HB. Lake Cootharaba is 2 hours from HB and is my pick for "all day sailing", versus the tidal sailing at BH and HB. Check the real estate offices in each location for houses etc.

I think the wife would be happiest around the Urangan area and there seems to be a few sailing options around. Also its a lot closer to the AJ. Now I just need to find accomodation.
