Hi All I hope to be in Cairns from June until the end of August on a windsurfing holiday getting away from Melbourne's weather. I have read a previous post and it seems I can sail at Yorkers , Tinaroo dam, Green Island.
I envisage sailing mostly at Yorkers with the odd day out at Green Island.
I have 3 boards but can only fit 2 in at the moment. My light wind board is a 118L with a 7.5 meter Zephyr sail, will I need this gear at this time of year in Cairns?.
My other 2 boards are a FSW 106L and a 85L wave board. The 106 is a great all-round board and the 85L wave is also a good board but slow and a bit boring in a straight line.
I am not a wave sailor just bump and jump stuff. I am thinking of bringing the 106L but thought maybe Yorkers will be to rough on a windy day and maybe I should bring the 85L instead.
Any advise greatly appreciated .

Wow, sounds like Cairns is going to be busy this coming season. Plenty of visitors.

Basla, you have picked a great time to head north, young man. My 2 cents worth, bring the 106 and 118 - that will cover all bases.

I might suggest that you steer clear of Yorkey's. can become pretty crowded with Kiters. Most of the crew sail either at Holloways Beach (next beach south of Yorkey's) or take a 40 min drive north to Port Douglas @ 4 mile beach. Also pretty crowed with kiters, but they don't go that far offshore. Tinaroo is out of bounds- way to cold. That leaves Green Is. 40 min ferry trip out of Cairns - with Great Adventures (they allow us to bring all our gear on board). Must have at least a 1.3m tide and at that time of the year you should get many days of 20knots or more from the SE generally. Across the reef flats with all the wildlife is just fantastic.

Its a long time since anyone has called me young man.
At the moment I am going to take the 118 & 106 boards as you suggested with a range of sails from 4.0 To 7.5.
Green Is and 20 knots sounds awesome, will have to get out there at some stage.

if you are driving up this way there are some good sailing spots on the way up. bowen, alva, townsville, inisfail, all great if the wind is up. bowen and alva tend to have more wind then the rest.don,t worry about the 85l board no real waves to use one.pm means private message.just use the email button to contact us on the botttom of the posters post

Thinking I might head to the coast once I get to queensland and check the beaches out on the way up to Cairns.
Will have to make a list of places, just very busy still building my camper.(The pressure is to at least get it useable)

Balsa, i am going to Cairns too around May.can't wait to see Great Barrier Reef, Green Island, skyrail, etc and hv a bit of sailing if circumstances allowed. Parentalrite is a very nice guy. Keep contact with him mate.

Came from Brisbane and met some nice blokes in Four Mile Beach today in Port Douglas.Biill , Andrew, James, Freddie and Ian .They are all friendly and helped me out a lot although my skills are not up to sailing in rough water or in high wind . Particularly thanks to Parentalrite for giving me lifts as I am not driving.
Nice to meet with those windsurfers and to see that beautiful beach in my Cairns trip

I have been watching the wind forecast and it seem a bit light up there around 10 knots.
If anybody can verify this it would be nice as I am getting a bit curious about how strong the wind actually is
around the Cairns area. Might have to figure out a way to bring my Kona 1 up there.
As a side note I sailed here yesterday , my bare feet were blue when I came in so Cairns here I come.
Just have to get the camper finished.

when I was therein 4MileBeach it was about 23knots and water was rough. I couldn't handle it.

Gday Garrick, This is just the start of sailing season up here so there should be plenty of wind around between June and August while you are here. This week has been a constant 15 to 20 knts on the coast and an additional 5 knts over at GI. If you check out the FNQ MOB under the GPS Team Challenge you'll see how the sailing's been for the past month (currently #1 on the leader board). Our team covers most of NQ from Yeppoon North so you may also get some other sailing spots in the wider region. Sailing at GI on a good tide is a must while you are here. As Winddragon says on the coast it is open ocean and rough most of the time. Get in touch when you come up to find out when is a good tide for the island. If the tide's good and it's windy you'll have company. By the way there are no Victorians entered in the GI NATS which starts 07/06 - you could be VIC's # 1 sailor.

Hi Kel71, I wouldn't make Vics #1001 sailor, something about a complete lack of talent but who cares that wind you describe sounds spot on for me. GI is on the top of the list of places to
go and have a sail. Thanks for the info.
