Thanks for your reply, I was wondering if it's a problem of getting blown off shore when your on the east side of something goes wrong?

Yeah it is a problem. especially because in westerlies the wind can just switch off or gust up to 35knots without warning. last few days the wind was fairly consistent.It's fairly shallow tho so you can walk back if you stay close to the bank.
The risk gets greater the further east you sail as it gets deeper and then there is a point where it drops off. There can also be an out flowing current near the concrete wall at the point. Where the gap is in the bank. If you break something or the wind dies then it's out to sea. I've seen a few people get rescued before.

flip side, it's pretty shallow near the bank when the tide drops so keep an eye on that too. .

I don't think learners or beginner intermediates should sail there in a westerly. much safer on the western side.

Warm westerlies. remembering times past, great sessions Ekka time, freezing cold. Blasting from the sand bank near king island to thorneside. Not got good westerly options down here.

Was good at Clontarf and Woody Point here on the Redcliffe Peninsula

Yes, I had two very good afternoons at Clontarf on Sat and Sun. Wind was very clean for a westerly.

How strong was the wind there.

Parking at wello is not great. Got to teach my son how to hike with gear to the launch spot

This should answer most of your questions. I was on 5.5m and 94 litres (which is a small as I would go out there). Westerlies can either be horribly gusty or quite reasonable. You won't know until you go out. Last weekend was especially good. Ntl there were still nuclear, near-unmanagebale gusts out there.

How much swell is there when a westerly is blowing? I can remember trying to sail off there in a strong south east and it was pretty rough.

In a strong westerly it's very close, steep, knee high chop. Going to windward can be pretty uncomfortable. Gybing will often see you crossing a few peaks, but it is just possible to come out in a trough if you are quick. Long drawn out gybes will make you slow down too much. There's sea grass about and it's the mouth of the Pine River so there's lot's of sea life - dugong, rays, and er... other animals. Tidal current isn't too strong, however.

I'm keen to try it, but only have a foil setup. No fin.

Hey Nikita if you want to foil on a westerly you can't go past Lake Clarendon in the Lockyer Valley. My go to on a westerly, no tide and deep water. Had the last 5 days in a row, more again tomorrow
Let's face it, westerlies are rubbish but conditions on this spot make it worthwhile. PM me if interested.

Haves sailed clontarf. Scares me a bit to be honest because of the wildlife and there is no return if gear breaks.
