Hi guys,

My brother is looking at learning to windsurf and he just moved to brisbane.

He weighs about 75 kg.

I have told him to look for a 120-150L freeride board to start with.

What size sail should he be looking for to start (wave / freestyle type sails)? and what are the wind strengths like over there.

un cammed 5.7 is my biggest sail and it does me for most things. i'm 70-75kg

a 6.2m to 7m is probably the most regular sized sail used in SEQ

As he is a beginner, wouldn't recomend anything too large. I am 70kg and have a 4.6, 5.3 and 6.5. I find that sufficient.
Would second Haircut's choice of uncammed and add freestyle. I assume he will be a bay/flat water sailor.

I'm a beginner and about 95kgs... I used a 5"8 on Saturday and found that to be enough for my level anyway...I was talking to another begginer last Saturday who was probably more like 70kgs and he was on about a 4"7 or there abouts

i have a mate learning.
Yesterday he was out on a 5.5 - its was perfect for him (90kg).

I was on a 6.6m, it was about right for me (85kg).

Good to note that when Haircut was a little boy a blue fairy came along and sprinkled early planing dust on his feet. There can be no other explanation for his uncanny ability to get planing in marginal conditions with tiny sails...

I am thinking suggesting he get somethign in the 5.7 --> 6.5m uncammed freestyle / wave sail for him to start with, and potentially something closer to 5m as a second sail. Probably look for the biggest sail that can be put on a 430 mast and a large wave boom (max length 200 maybe). Looks like there might be a few options on seabreeze.

Where are good places for begineers to go and learn where he might be able to ask some other sails tips on rigging and such? Ideally I would show him but its hard from the other side of the country.

If he likes it he can go nuts after a season and buy whatever he likes. Just trying to work out a good combination for a begineer to maximise time on water so he can pick it up quickly.

Rose Bay at Manly is a great place to learn to sail, heaps of beginners sail here and most sailboarders are approachable. Board Crazy also do there lessons there so it must be a good spot to learn.

Just send him over to Boardcrazy. Most experienced windsurf retailer in Brissy and the best customer service IMO. Simon can sort him out with gear, or at least teach him how to rig it - and he also does lessons. Ph 38916470

I agree,Rose bay is a great place to learn..I had a few lessons with Simon from board crazy at the beginning of the year highly recommend it.

70kg on a 100lt board will certainly help.

I am quite amazed how weight sensitive windsurfing is - I am often out with haircut & his largest is 5.7? - I am 97 kg & my largest is 7.8m, mid size 6.5m and my small = 5.8 m - I have a 5.5 & 5 & 4.5 but never use them.
my big sail 15 - 22knt - 6.5= 22- 26knt & 5.8 25 - 30+ knot If it was a serious wind day at consistently above 30 knt would rig smaller but it usually only gusts temporarily above 30 knot.

back to the question - I remember learning with a cammed 6.5 - but it was so very hard to waterstart, and a lot of weigth to uphaul. I went for a big sail becasue it had a ton of power so you could get going on nice sunny light wind days (that are attractive to learners) - But frankly i didnt really make progress till I got a 5.5m raf sail & started having a go at windy days. smaller lighter sail + good solid wind = best conditions to develop skills. Lighter wind with big sails you end up in the drink fighting with your rig too much.

Hey filthy,
I weigh 60kg and i have 5.7 and a 120L board. Im fairly new to windsurfing and at my experience lvl i can use my gear in winds up to about 15 knots.
+1 for learning at manly :)
