hey i have an older jp wave board, its a jp 267 free, 100L
With a 6.6m sprint , which is like 06 model, wat type of top speed do you think would be possible. this is considering all conditions. Cus i can't crack 30 knots....and its really annoying me, so now im shifting the blame 2 the board.
Wat are your thoughts. Can a wave/freestyle board easily crack 30knots?

I've had a go a couple of times on my Acid, and can't get past 25 knots or so. On a slalom board I'd be doing 30's. I don't know if this is because it uses a US box or whether it's just that I'm using a wave fin.

Flat water really helps as well - people regularly hit mid to high 30's on wave gear at Sandy Point.

In an easy answer, the Sandy Point guys I think have done 40+ on some wave boards.

The more valid question is

What is the condition of the water where you sail, that is a more determining factor to achieving speed.

A wave board is primarily not designed for speed but maneuverability and handling. If you are running in a seriously bumpy area it may be quicker than the "Go faster" stuff.

I've seen Troppo do it a few times with a couple of 32's at Yorkey's FNQ. The other day he got a nautical mile average of 29.27 knots on a wave board and a 4.2M wave sail at Green Island. This was way off the island and in "very rough water", but then the kid can sail I had a hell of a time out there and gave up
I think if you're on open water, try the wave board, might give you more control and that'll give you speed.

Most likely a combination of water state and fin. I use a JP Freestyle Wave 91L (2005)and on the stock 29cm JP Carve fin(powerbox) in chop will struggle to get it over 30. Give the same set up flat water and 32 is achievable. Get a better fin and chop and 33. Better fin and flat water and have hit 35+.
The last thing is you have to go broad. Really broad. You will only get the higher speeds when you carry enough sail to be powered up even when you bear away to 120+ degrees off the wind.

30 not a problem with that setup, 40 in flat conditions maybe with smaller sail.
To help use the smallest fin to do the job going off the wind with out it spinning out, move it to the rear of the box. Try riding the board off that last bit of tail rocker, or it may prefer a bit flatter ride, its about finding that sweet trim spot that the board goes its fastest.

Tune your gear to do the job, fill out the sail for going off the wind, ask around for some help setting your gear up.

Got to remember that Spottys built like half a whale and has no sense of what you shouldn,t try on a wave board. I do remember that day with the Aero and how close Spotty came to punching a big hole in the water. Daffys also done some quick times on his acid on the east bank

This one was my best. Just a brief peak in a wild gust at over 40 knots but it was a wild ride!

You can go pretty fast on a wave board . Spotty has proved that,he is the man!!! , but even a mere mortal like myself has done 36 max with a wave fin on a Lorch Oxygen Wave 73 at Sandy point.

I'm sure you can do it and I have some inspiration for you. Here's my very first attempt at speed sailing caught on video. 4.7m Ezzy Wave an old 79l f2 wave board, the cheap wave fin was so loose in the A-box that it split the box.

That run was 28kn but I have since cracked thirty on wave gear.

I've hit 35 knots on an RRD FSW 100ltr and a 6.8m Gun Race sail. Not ideal combo but still quick (and the massive nose rocker inspires confidence in chop!).

Hey steller, 35 knts on a F2 Axxis with a 5 m Rapidfire sail at SP. I think the most important factors are - sailing broad, modern loose leech sail rigged correctly, powered to over powered and great conditions like at Sandy Point

38 on a starboard carve 99, not rearly wave, more free ride. Goolwa SA
But 42 on the 117 aero.... insane

Any suggestions for a fin?

I sail a 77L JP FSW with the 23cm powerbox fin that came with it, planes plenty early and great for bashing around but I am feeling the need for more speed.

Looked in the shop today but they only had wave shapes below 27 cm. The mfc liquid pro looked great but only went down to 28 cm.

Would prefer more of a freerace shape for some bay blasting this summer.

Mainly sail a 5.2 and don't weigh much (70kg)

I have used a Flying objects weedster 26cm powerbox with my 91FSW. Not great in chop but have had it up to good speeds.
