at present i have a 105l i sonic as my smallest slalom board which i genraly use with my 7.4 north ram but i also have a 6.3 so been toying with the idea of trying to find a smaller board for the realy windy days to put the 6.3 on. i was thinking maybe something like a 85l ish isonic but then there is a strong urge to go all out and get a speed board as ive seen a very cheap 2006 f2 66l missile. if i was to go for a speed board how resticted will i be with it and if i went for a small slalom board how much performance will i be missing on. i also have to take into account its seams small isonic's seam prity hard to find at a sensible price.

What conditions would you sail it in, and how heavy are you? I'm 95kg and unless its a solid 20kts plus just sink my missile its best in 25kts plus!!

IMHO You will get way more value and TOW with a small slalom board. The Iso86 would be a good start. i had the iso 105 and the 86 and found they covered a huge wind range.

Unless you have a nice flat speed coures that gets 25knts plus often get a small slalom board.

i ges if it was a speed board it would be normaly sailed in chopey harber type condition but the maybe visit a few speed strips ocasanly.there is a small bar out in the middle of one harber which works quite nicly and gives flatish water. i waigh about 75kg without equipment.

At 75kg you could get away with a large speed board around 49-54cm wide they will be anywhere form 65l to 75L

If its the 50cm wide missile, which I think the 2006 is, I've heard its more like a fast slalom baord, and at 75kgs just might suit you, or I agree with Bender a small slalom board would suit you better, unless you get to sail more than 10 to 15 times a year in 25kts plus!!

That's an easy one! You need a Tabou Manta 49.

It's a small (63 litre) speed / slalom board that goes fast (45 knots plus) on a speed course, but is even better in the rough stuff. I have a lot of fun playing in the ocean with it; jumping and carving gybes off wave faces.

I am 78kg and need about 18 knots of breeze to get it wound up with a 6.3, and it's at it's best with a 5.7 or 5.2.

I have sailed the Missile and it's a quick board but it's tough to control in rough water. You get your speed on the Manta from the fact that it's so easy to sail and you have the confidence to drive it hard. Confidence = speed.

If you don't want something that small, but still want an allrounder with potential to go 40 knots plus, go for a 54 which is around 75 litres. All the above still applies.

I'm about 75 kg as well and really like the IS87 for action on the 5.8m Koncept. Occasionally I use it with the 6.6m and 34 cm fin but the 5.8m is more the sweet spot for me with 30cm or 26 cm fins. Done my best alpha speeds, one hour and a 41 knots peak on this board with Time Machine speed-26 symmetrical fin or KA 30cm slalom fin. Great from 16 knots up to high 20's. Nice and stable and fast in chop as well as excellent (if a little large compared to my small speed boards) on the speed course.

I have sailed the 50cm 2006 F2 Speed board at Sandy Point and to me and my size it felt like a small slalom board. Quite floaty and very easy to sail and gybe. Very nice on flatish water but I can't comment on what it would be like in open water swell and chop.

hi many thanks for the replys.after reading them all its still left me quite torn between the two i think my gut is probly saying a small slalom but my wallet is saying the misille is cheap i belive it is the 66l and 50cm wide vershion ive googled it to try find out more but i cant figger if its the one with those big air vents or not.i ges one of the main things that wories me is am i going to be stuck for going up wind and if the wind drops at only 66l am i going to be floating in water up to my knees,my wave boards arnt even that small.

a pedro e, a you that dude that came down to inverloch last summer and you had a mass wipe out on a speed run and you ended up breaking all ya demo gear?? you did a awesome job of it man i like you. you go hard or ya go home that's the way to do it, son.

Last tuesdy dude at the pit i smacked the nose of me trusty jp excite board for the forth time. My fin hit a sand bar then i went flying through the air over me rig. I think it's my worse stack i have had yet. I sailed back with a wobbly boom and badly dinted board.

have a look at the JP Speed 54, IMHO I think it is a great compromise between a full slalom or full speed board, it handles the chop really well, is comfortable to sail, gybes well and is quick................

tbh i hadnt looked at the jp and unfortunatly i wouldnt be able to afford anything new or newish realy, i would like to stay with the isonic's or if i cant fanatic because i have a sertan loyalty to them at the moment inless something elses comes up second hand that is a real bargain and i can put some stickers on its just small slalom boards are quite few and far between over here it seams

quite simply one of the best small slalom speed boards you can buy.

i read something about it being back foot sensative and its prone to spin out alot but that was the only review i found how o u find it?????

best small slalom board on the market: Jp speed 49/54 (not the best speed boards though )
Best pure speed boards: CA's

I would also take into consideration what type of fins you have, would be silly to get a JP board and then have a bunch of tuttlebox fins laying around.

JP speed use tuttle in slalom and speed boards malloy. get with the program.

I'm quite sure I saw that all but the smallest of their 2010-boards had powerbox, I see now that that is true, but only for the SuperSport boards, the slalom and speed boards are tuttlebox.

Anywho, my point about checking the fin boxes is still valid ;)

yea all my small slalom fins are all tuttle box so no worey there.ive got a thing about jp's though so wont be going that direction sory

Thought I'd throw in some thoughts to confuse you more. I'm 102 kg (ISH) and have done some testing in this area comparing the 07 F2 SX xs (80 litre) and the 07 missile s (63 litre) a few years ago . Both on the speed couse and in the bay, they are very similar in aound 25 knots. Side by side testing I did constant 42's on both boards at Sandy Point on flat water. In the bay in 10-12 "chop, 38-39's in the same conditions. I usually run the 6.6 koncept or even the 5.8 if its a bit above 25. The Sx does plane earlier and the missile is more comfotable at speed. Worth noting that the missle s is definately faster in stronger winds, and seems to top out around 47 kn. If you have a nearby speed strip and you have the speed bug, get youself a missle xs. At 75 kg, it'll go in 25 kn and has no top end limit. It will still take the 6.3 but prefers 5-5.8. If you're looking at 20-25, the missile s will easily get going with a 6.3 and is surprisingly "slalomy" but in these coditions, a good small slalom board will be just as quick.
the short of it? If you have a great speed strip nearby, go the missle (either one, depending on ave windspeed) but if you are in the bay or ocean, go the slalom.

cheers for that ive been speaking to a friend who has a few small isonics so im hoping to beable to try one at some point which i think will help me make my decision a lot more easy an i think its the best way forward.
