The WGPSSRC have not received the record claim yet but I am sure it will be in the mail!

Dennis is already the second place in the 24 hr records although for some reason unknown to me it does not show up on GPSSS record rankings.

There is certainly more interest in chasing this record than you might think, considering the physical pain and sailing boredom factors!

Congratulations Dennis. What a mammoth effort - thought Kato's record would take something special to beat but this number is insane.

The NH twlight combined with the super full moon would have provided some ideal lighting conditions too.

Um I think Dennis' best hour was a 25+kn but he sailed over 22 hours so his average was around 16kn per hour excluding breaks etc.

the question was, given higher latitudes there should be a lot more pre-dawn / post-sunset twilight, then at mid-latitudes.

eg: Melbourne 2012/06/27
- sunrise: 7:36 am
- Civil twilight: 7:07 am
- Nautical twilight: 6:34 am

In other words, you get about 30-60mins more twilight.

And today in NL

Sunrise in Amsterdam is at 05:20:44 and sunset time in Amsterdam is at 22:06:25.
Length of the day in Amsterdam is 17:46
Civil twilight begins at 04:31:23 and ends at 22:55:46
Nautical twilight begins at 03:11:07 and ends at 00:16:02

PS...Nautical twilight is defined as the time that you can still navigate by seeing the horizon.

The WGPSSRC received Dennis' claim yesterday and it looks like he sailed almost exactly those nautical twilight hours!

Jacques van der Hout is planning a go at it while they have plenty of daylight.
He's done 500km+ in 13 hours so should kill it if it keeps blowing for 20 hours.

That is a huge distance, well done Dennis. Remarkable in so many ways including getting consistent wind for long enough to do it!

There is an error adjustment that is made with the record. So the minimum distance that Dennis sailed is 613.8KM but he also may have sailed 670km too . Bloody good effort either way.

The days are long down in tassie during summer, is there any good places for a record attempt in tassie?

Does anyone feel like sailing across bass strait is doable considering how much shorter it is?

Congrats Dennis, Fantastic effort..
My plans for the atempt were stumped in Cairns by inconsistant wind for the 3 weeks I was there... but enjoyed the Slalom Nats..
The Planning continues though so who knows when and where I'll give it a go...
