Anyone for an iPhone speed sailing app? I've knocked up a quick prototype but would like to know if there's any interest before I shell out $90 for an Apple Developer subscription so I can put it on the App Store.

It isn't my intention to offer a competing product to GPSLogit, I'm aiming for something simple:

1. Easily read on the water.
2. Audio speed feedback. (chimes when accelerating or spoken, is there a preference?)
3. Ability to log sessions.

Being an iPhone user I am certainly interested, but I have very deep reservations regarding using my iPhone on the water! I don't think I would risk it, whereas I am happy to use and risk the cheap $48 Android phone.

No way I'd risk a $700 phone by taking it our speedsailing. I can get a dozen Android phones for that money. Looks like the Paqua bag is better quality than any bag I can find here in the US, but even if the bag does not fail (mine always do sooner or later), there's always a remaining risk in bad crashes.

FYI Just as a safety measure I've sailed with an iPhone in a Paqua bag for a couple of years now without an issue. Also lifeproof covers work really well and have saved my phone countless times from everyday stuff.

As for audio feedback. I've played with a Gps app that chimes for speed feedback and also used Logit. The spoken feedback is much more effective.

Just another handy tip not many people know. If you ever do drown your iPhone just make an appointment online at the "Genius Bar" in your nearest Apple store and (after a quick inspection) a kid in skinny jeans carrying an iPad will replace your phone for around $300 (depending on model/size) it's worked for me, twice!

Id throw it on my old 4S in a life proof no probs. In a bag too if you want that extra protection.

Thanks all for the replies. Looks like I'll pull my finger out and finally get an app past the prototype stage, I've only been promising myself I'll do one since I got my hands on an iPhone 3G.

I'll try and target iOS 7 and later which would go all the way back to iPhone 4.

Sounds like spoken is the way to go but I'll give it one last attempt at trying to convince chimed might be just as good (because I'm lazy...) The current implementation is that the phone audibly chimes whenever there is a change in speed from the last chime. The threshold is currently set at 0.5kts but that is just a guess at what might be best and will likely be configurable. There is a chime for accelerating and a bonk noise (standard iPhone noises) when decelerating, these will probably be configurable as well. I thought this would be just as useful as spoken when combined with the easily read display. If you hear the chimes stop, you can glance down to get a rough idea of what top speed you peaked at.

If you're still not convinced, how would people like to see spoken feedback implemented?

The plan of action is to polish the prototype and then release free, time limited betas to those who are prepared to be guinea pigs with their iPhones.

If you want to do audio feedback and spoken voice is too hard, try variable pitch.

ie. pitch goes higher with increaseing speed.

I'd prefer spoken for the ability to be able to know what speed you're at different stages in a run eg. the ability to hit a particular speed before a bear away and to be able to know how fast you are traveling when your chasing a 2sec or NM. I've tried looking at my speed before and Its just too dangerous in some conditions. I've played with an app that lets you set different chimes for different speed bracket. Just got all to hard to follow on top of everything else you need to be thinking about.
So my vote is for spoken, sorry :/
