what happened to the good old days of racing your friends acrooss the river.

this sailing miles upwind + then downwind is sooo boring.

imagine the mens 100m at olympics, each competitor runs by himself + is timed by gps to find the winner, sooo boring.

sailing on flatwater with 6inch chop so you can get a high peak time,as interesting as watching paint dry.

ok, maybe once in a while but not everytime you sail.

the competitive nature of racing[with more than one person competing] is taken away.

it just aint natural to compete against a gps like it is to drag race across the river.

get a life you guys + get back to nature.

You can still "drag race" your mates across a river with the GPS on. What it does do it add another "competition" to the mix plus gives you something to achieve. Breaking your PB by half a knot feels just like you have broken a major world record. . Also you can compare speeds with your mates and see who was the fastest for the day. Competition makes everyone try that little bit harder which will improve your speeds and gybes (eventually i hope). Sometimes you think you are improving and going faster but the GPS reveals that you actually are or not.

maybe if you didn't drown your gps a while back you'd probably be out there enjoying it too
I guess then all sports judged by timing are boring?-eg.downhill mountain biking,downhill skiing etc.

Join the Weds night chases at Peli for your fix. Starts next week.

Or you could annoy someone with a GPS on by chasing them around the river. I am sure they would respond.

I can assure you that it's stronger than ever!!

The difference is that you can race guys who aren't right next to you... you can change gear and see if it has made a difference, objectively, instead of always assuming that the most expensive/newest gear is always faster...

But you're right, nothing beats belting across the estuary squeezing the boom in a deathgrip with the red mist descending as your mate manages to just get ahead of you by the mark

btw Pelican Point races are on next Wednesday. It's your all old-fashioned twice round the mark style of racing. Hope to see you there

PS - Peter,
As I sail 99% of the time by myself I find the whole GPS Speed Sailing (specifically the GPSTC) a great opportunity to improve on my sailing ability and to belong to a fraternity of like minded people and last but not least it eliminates any possible boredom from sailing on my pat malone. I would love the opportunity to race other windsurfers regularly to hone my racing skills, but alas there is no one up here really interested in slalom sailing (or GPS) as conditions are predominantly B & J.
I don't think you are either right or wrong with your observation but rather it's a matter of what tickles your fancy the most.....sh1t some people even go kiting for enjoyment.

So you have not joined a GTC team them, because if you had you would have found out that not only do you wear a GPS when blasting around you get to drag race with your team mates.

Dont knock what you are not part of, it just make you look/sound like a D#ck

besides, after years of going to slalom events and waiting for wind then packing up and off home with no racing, this is great.....you just have your event wherever and whenever you want.....heaps better.
Nothing like measuring what you're doing rather than guessing what you're doing.

You're obviously using your GPS wrong.

Set the Speed alert to vibrate
Set it at 25 knots
put GPS down front of pants
