Hi all.
Can anybody recomend a gps device for logging speed and distance data that is under $300.
The reason im asking is there are so many online starting at about $50 from golfing, push biking to running and hiking and sailing devices with bugger all info on them.
I know there are great devices such as garmin and coros watches. .But if im dropping upwards of $300 id preffer to put that kind of money into new boards or sails.
Any info would be appreciated.

Well, if all you need is Log speed and distance data, then the Mini Motion is unbeatable and significantly than those $$$.

But if you want a screen to view results while you are active, that is a different problem.

The Home Built GPS's ESP is probably what you are looking for but you either have to build it yourself or get in a group if friends who do a group build. Both options require at least some basic skills and tools.

see this thread:

Many people are buying a Mini Motion and a more inexpensive Garmin Sports watch for in the water feedback on used for other activities, especially with the Garmin GPSTC Datafield that Andrew Haigh has developed and generously distributes free of charge. This great app gives you all the info you could want for most sailing things.

If just for personal use and not for competition, just go the Garmin and Andrew's Datafield like Sailquik suggested but without the Motion. I don't use them so if I'm wrong someone will chime in
