I've been on the harbour all day and the wind is blowing pretty bloody good.

I here there is a storm warning coming up for tonight, so where are all the speed sailors???
(I dont see any entries for NSW teams for today!)

Working and AFAIK windsurfing is banned on Sydney Harbour except for in the bays. I've never seen anyone windsurfing in the main part of the harbour.

Once daylight savings starts I'll be able to go sailing after work, just like last summer till the January doldrums arrived.

I did once about 10 years ago - the sailor was scooting along quite quick in the main channel - A Water Rat Curiser gave chase but couldn't catch him, was ammusing - They abandonded the chase and waited for him make his return tack, then nabbed him.
From what I could see they gave him a long talking to, then towed him into Rose Bay.
I can just Imagine the conversation- " wadda u mean not allowed" lol.

Ive seen a guy outpacing most traffic sailing along the ferry route from Manly Cove to about abeam North Head in a good westerly. A couple of years ago now so the fun police would now frown on it Id say.

We still get the formula kit on the water sailing from Balmoral up in to Manly Wharf. Not supposed to be there but the waterways guys have seen us and gone straight on by so far. Good thing too as the Noreaster in there is pretty fun.

Rose Bay is supposedly allowed - just not allowed out to the shipping channels.

As Sydney Harbour becomes less of a commercial port do you ever think its possible the ban could be lifted or altered? I think the ban commenced in the 80s when many people were windsurfing with skills and equipment probably at lower levels than they are today. Since that time most commercial activities besides the ferries, a few ocean liners and I guess Navy boats have reduced considerably.

Perhaps we could approach the minister responsible and ask for a review? AFAIK any drongo in a tinny or a dingy can sail wherever they like on the harbour, as evidenced in that fatal boating collision a few months ago.

worth a crack I think.
I will ask a mate from the sailing club who has a bit to do with the waterways what we should do.

Hey team, I got an email from waterways with a very old school brochure on where we can windsurf on Sydney Harbour. The information is still current.
Anywhere yellow is a no go.
If you want a copy it is in .pdf format email me and I will send it on.

Hi Sydney folk. Great to see sailors still running the gauntlet in Jackson. I grew up there and although the Harbour might be OK for a late arvo session, I used to avoid it like the plague. Good training for shifty conditions maybe. Powerboats, ferries, yachts, flotsam, tough launching and shifty winds. I'd rather the surf or even Botany. I know a good southerly buster can whip through and the noreasters are OK, but still IMHO a second choice spot all round.

Interesting to see the restrictions still in place though. Best of luck with that.

Yeah you have to go to somewhere like Perth and see the access they have to waterways to learn how the average bloke in NSW has been shafted by people with money and councils.

I was up at Pittwater the other day and saw some mongrel have built their elevated backyard over the beach so you can't walk by their place along the beach anymore. Its really unbelievable we let this sort of thing happen.

That map is obsolete now, especially with the big no go area between the heads. Bugger all goes on there nowdays except for a few people going fishing.
