Tweet from the VESTAS Sailrocket 2 team, 16 November 2012, 17:34:13:
That's it... We've smashed the arse off it! 59 knot average. Live from end of speed spot!
More soon!

"
The title says it all. It's just soaking in now... with the Champagne.

Calling friends, team members... all are family tonight.

I'm sitting here with great French champagne all around and smiling people. VESTAS Sailrocket 2 sits outside on the lawn shivering lightly in the decreasing breeze. She has the noble composure of a race winning horse that struts around wondering what all the fuss is about.

We are downloading the TRIMBLE data now. The great thing is that the GPS we use out there is set for a 18 second average... but at 59 knots we might not need that long. It said we did a 59.01 knot average... The TRIMBLE should be higher. I will let you know here when I know.

I think I'll drink some more Pol Roger... and wait.

Christ... I'm buzzing and I know it is just going to get better. I will have this for life now.

There it is 59.23 knot average fresh off the TRIMBLE. 62.53 peak.

Records subject to WSSRC ratification.

I'm signing out.

I have too many people to thank I don't know where to start.

I have to call mum and dad.

The happiest days!

Still more to come.

Paul. "

My congratz to Paul, his team and Australia. After meeting Paul in Walvis Bay some years ago I am happy that he and his team did it. It was a long and hard road, but then the reward is there. 59.23 knots over 500 meter. RESPECT !!

can't believe someone red thumbed you Spotty gee there are some real wankers floating around these forums hiding behind their key boards, I think it's time Lauire introduce similar system to FB where you can see who liked or disliked.....

Anyway back to the subject sensational speed and great effort didn't happen overnight either....

I've been watching and posting stuff on Sailrocket for years. I am so happy to see the team and mainly Paul (being an Aussie) smash this record. As a windsurfer I would loved it to have been us but if it can't be a windsurfer then Sailrocket is the next in line in my opinion.
My congratulations go to all involved and here's hoping they don't stop now, I think a 60knot average is in the making.

Fantastic vision and engineering skills!
Fantastic teamwork and perseverance!

It does seem that 60+ 500m average is in reach for SailRocket.

Probably a kiter

Amazing effort and that orange cigar is an incredible piece of engineering - well done guys and all the sweeter it was skippered by an Aussie.

Cannot forget the insane speeds that the windsurfers have been punching out too. November 2012 and Namibia won't be forgotten for a long time. Modern technology has brought it instantaneously into our living rooms.

Two thumbs up and congrats to the Sailrocket mob - feels like they've been chasing the record forever!!

Will be interesting to see how hard investigation of the possible issue of minimum-depth over the course of the run gets pushed, and who pushes it.

More importantly though it gives the kiters something worth chasing again.

Better still, I reckon it's definitely gettable/already within reach too -> check out Seb Cattelan's online PB stats versus Sailrocket's new (hopefully record) run:

Sailrocket peak speed 62.53 knots
S.C.'s Max. GPS (display) 61.79 knots
S.C.'s Max. 2 sec. (software) 61.25 knots

Sailrocket 500m average 59.23 knots
S.C.'s 100 m average 59.85 knots

Not that much in it eh?

Fair enough, S.C.'s 500m average for that particular session was only a lousy 53.06 knots,..... but also bear in mind that this session happened a good 3 years ago now -> wonder what other sessions the top kiter's have scored since then and have kept tucked up their sleeves (i.e. haven't published online)? S.C. only posted 3 sessions this year, Alex Caizergues 5 or 6, and Rob Douglas almost never posts.

So if the kiter's can get their 500m average close to their peak speeds like Sailrocket has, we'll have a real horse-race on our hands.

P.S. just wanted to get it on record that whoever it was that red-thumbed Spotty's post, it wasn't me! I have to admit, there are a few vindictive sods in the tea-bagging brigade, but, dare I suggest it,..... perhaps it could have been some poor disgruntled windsurfer who objected to having to read about how the windsurfers are falling yet further,....

.....and further,.......

.....and further,.......

.....and yet still further behind everyone else in the outright speed record stakes.

Hmmm, 'wonder how many red-thumbs that last comment mine will attract to this posting?

Et tu Brute?!

Man, with friends like these....

Ah well,.. hopefully will be catching up with yourself and the rest of the Pit rabble down at the 'Strip before Christmas rolls around (you'll be able to pull the knife out of my back then so you can return it to the missus ). They're not too fond of it when their cutlery goes missing.

Check y'all then!

By a totally freakish coincidence, my wife just came home from a public meeting in Sale and told me had just met Paul's mother at the meeting. Damn, it's a small world!!

Amazing speed. Would have loved to have seen another angle ( maybe with shore in the background) to get a better perspective of the speed.
