Very sobering Paul. Sailing in the shallows has it's dangers for sure. I agree with Elmo's comments in a previous thread: because there isn't a lot of water to land in when it does go wrong be really careful. For that reason I wear an impact buoyancy vest as well as helmet and take it easy in any spot until I have completely sorted the depths. I have a family to come home to and want to keep it that way. One of the nice things about high rake fins in a place like Fangy's is that you will just grind to a halt if you touch bottom rather than get smacked with a dead stop. But even so if you are sailing a shallow spot for the first time talk to someone who knows where the mischief lies.Thanks for posting that Paul, a timely reminder.

Yes, wear a helmet if you're going fast.
One good reason to wear a hat is that you can fit the GT31 in the lining on top of your head and it reads (in my case) faster than on your arm.
