'Been getting into my skindiving/freediving and spearfishing recently, so will be bringing the gear down to the SpeedFortnight with the intent of going for a dive (& hopefully seeing if I can pick something up for dinner while I'm out there) if we get any windless and swell-less days.

Will also bring down the surfboard if there's swell but not much wind (or if it's a northerly).

So if anyone else is interested in doing either of these things during the SpeedFortnight, bring your stuff too - it'd be good to have some company out there (especially for skindiving/freediving/spearfishing -> having a dive buddy to watch out for you is pretty important safety-wise).

Anyone else have ideas for fun stuff to do on less-than-perfect days?

There's golf nearby I understand. Plus of course there's the obvious couchsurfing, watching DVD's, drinking beer, and of course, doing all three of these simultaneously -> who says men can't multi-task?.

Another thought - whip up some homemade fins. Anyone interested?

Am halfway considering bringing down the 'ol acoustic guitar -> if anyone's any good at playing I'll bring it (beware: it's just an old plywood beater, but it's playable) -> as I'm just a beginner I'm naturally a bit reluctant to inflict my playing on others..

I know these kinds of activities are not why we're all heading to the SpeedFortnight, but it pays to be prepared......

That being said I've got the fingers, eyes, legs, etc crossed & am praying that Huey makes all of these preparations completely redundant by blowing WSW at 30 knots (with the occasional 30+ knot day thrown in just to keep us all properly humble) for all 14 days of the SpeedFortnight.

Cheers!

Smart man, your dad!

Surely there will be so much wind that any other time will be spent recovering? and beer. Did I mention beer?

Go-karts eh?

I like!

Looks like they've got a $79 race package for groups of 10 or more.... ;

The Format: 10 minute warmup/practice followed by 3 x 10 minute races.

The Karts: 9 h.p. "Phoenix Endurance Class" karts (get up to 70 kph) -> sound gutsy enough and quick enough to be a bit of fun.

The Track: had a squiz at the pic on the website (http://stonycreekgokarts.com.au/the-track/); decent-sized outdoor track in good nick (newish?) -> love the outdoor tracks as you've got the space to really open 'em up and fang' it.

Karting's a pricy way of having fun, but it's been several years since I've done it so if we can get a group together, I'd certainly be interested in having a go -> perhaps we could have a mid-SpeedFortnight Grand Prix?

... by the way, is there a Paintball site nearby? -> it just occurred to me that if at the end of the SpeedFortnight there's any sore feeling amongst the attendees, they could sort it out on a Paintball field [}:)]

Looks like a few people going to be there. A couple of us coming down from my area. Anyone tell me what sort of numbers of sailors will be there?

Does anyone have a favourite long range forecast site to monitor SP for the first week?

Cheers,
EB

Well, you can count on most of the PiT Crew just for starters. Add in the West Coast guys. Double that for regular interstate attendees and add a few for first timers and multiply by some random figure and you should just about have it. Say... somewhere between a dozen and a Fish Creek Footy crowd.

My favorite 14 day forecast is Weatherzones 14 day GFS computer model charts but remember that anything past a few days is pretty unreliable here this time of the year. Just a general indication really.

Not sure if this link will work unless you are a member. It's only a few dollars a month though....

Ahhh, who needs brakes anyhow!

That's weird isn't it? I thought all karts had the brake on the left?

I guess they are sick of people burning up the brakes. Looks like you could probably use them both at the same time if you try hard enough.

Im in complete awe...

The level of activity by you AUers is simply amazing and I must admit I am fairly envious right now :)

For future reference, when does the Speed Fortnight take place, because I'm about to put the event on my 'Top 10 things to do in my lifetime'-list :)

Speed fortnight is held in roughly the first two weeks of October, but it is timed to coincide with the first week of the event being the last week of the local school holidays so this year it starts on Saturday the 26th of September.
