The winds at Sandy Point on Thursday were right at the top end of what we get. Gusting over 50 knots! Very seldom below 40 Knots.
In these conditions it is right on the edge sailing. You either can't get started, crash big time or get a PB!
Mat and Hajime on 4m KA Koncepts. Mat managed to get 5 runs and PB's for peak 2 sec. and 10 sec. which was a super effort! Hajime tried until he got trapped in by the tide. A great effort but didn't manage to get a run. It does not help that he is only 59KG, even with 10KG of lead on board!

Ado and Kato were on 4,4m Koncepts and looked pretty much in control. Ado got 5 runs as well as new peak, 2 sec and 10 second PB's. He actually said he felt a bit underpowered on one run! Unbelievable!!
I was on 4.2m and right on the edge. I only wore 3kg of weight and I am sure another 4 or 5 would have made a uge difference but with so little sailing in the last 12 months I didn't want to risk ending up on the other side of the inlet. Pathetic I know...... I still got a nice peak, standing up, half sheeting in....

As the tide came in the bank gets shallower. It caught out Mat at well over 40 knots! Check this:

Mats track shows he peaked at 42.9kts just as he touched the sand. He went over the front at 41.5 and was stopped in under two seconds!

Videos don't do it justice. It was probably not quite as relentlessly strong as Big Sunday, but close. It did ease briefly to around 4okts at times which gave us a chance to get going. In the big squalls it was every bit as strong with rolling smoke spray on the water!

Congrats Mat on the PBs you guys are mad going out in that wind. Was there in Sept last year when 30 plus squalls were coming through with heavy rain and that was bad enough and bloody freezing. Glad there were no injuries.

Bloody 'ell! Looks like we are going to get smashed again tomorrow. Windguru forecast almost a duplicate of yesterday!



At least we might have a slightly more favorable tide.

if you notice at 09sec, in the video, what appears to be a gust comes from the sandy Knoll to the left of screen. at the same time smoke appears at the rear of the board.

I believe it was not the sand on the bank that delivered the Kill shot but the gust from the sandy Knoll. you can see matt lift, then reach to scrape his gear back together after the initial explosion. unfortunately the damage, by this stage, is done. his gear is now in freefall.

he is a mere passenger, travelling at the speed of sound. I calculated the time it took for his rail to grab and the katapult to occur and scaled it off the surrounding wind swell.

now I put it to you, that the sandy point crew have Konspired to cover up new fin technology that has failed and blamed the "accident" on the sandy bank when it was clearly the gust from the sandy Knoll.

Nice stack Matthew, well done. I had flash backs to my 40knot grounding in just about the same spot. I was hooked in, it's amazing how a carbon boom can break in so many places.
I hear your speed was almost as impressive as the stack too.

46.12 kn 2 sec .. new PB for me that day.

I think a shorter fin might have helped..! Was having a good run too, fast high up the course -> couldn't quite tell where the water finished and the sand started. However it happened (I reckon it could have been some low-flying con-trails), was just a bit lucky to have only snapped the harness lines and not, say, my wrist.

I hit the sandbar at 46.5 knots. Took a bit of steering to get out into deeper water. Mild strain to the back foot ankle while transferring the strain and driving the board downwind. Wind was about 40 knots I think.

Damn tides strike again - but what a rush! I reckon I could've added a knot or two in better conditions and a slipperier fin - must have been 15cm chop where I was sailing.

Just out of interest Matt, if you hadn't the off, were you going to sail on the inside of Kato or was Kato going to duck under the water just at the last second?

On a good day, it is possible to sail less than a metre away from the edge... but not in this case apparently. (The water was pretty rough out further probably between 6in to about 12in...) I would have relied on Kato being a good little citizen and getting out of the way!

In all seriousness, the guys walking back along the sand will be keeping their fins just deep enough to not touch the sand -> which gives the sailor a good reference point for depth.

What on earth did I say to deserve red thumbing? I was just relating what happened...we all had a great session. I would have thought such a story would be interesting, especially when it was a triple PB run for me. Oh well, maybe I won't bother next time.

Matt's just related above - the sandbars were shallow and hard to spot. It was freaking windy. Just getting going was a challenge. Matt did a forward loop - I managed to survive a similar hit on the sand - but only just. I analysed my trackpoints and I'm certain I was travelling at the peak speed just as I hit the bar at the end of the run. It was my fastest ever 10sec and my fastest 500m. Very happy considering the tough conditions..
