i have been posting on the GPS-TC for a few years and thought the rules were posted on the website!
but I have been reading a few other posts on other threads and I am now confused?
what are the rules!
The website lists Approved GPS's

NAVI GT-35 (uses 0.2 sec recording intervals which is approved for this Challenge)
NAVI GT-31 (uses 1 sec recording intervals)
NAVI GT-11 (uses 1 sec recording intervals)
Garmin Foretrex Series Garmin Gecko Series
Garmin Edge (1 second setting) Garmin Legend Cx (1 second setting),

Also I was told when I started that we had to use KA72 to post these results!
but people are using lots of programs!

I have checked my data with KA72 and real speed and the results can be different some times by a lot which could mean a PB for a beginner like me!
I just use KA72 as that's what I have always used and it means other people can check my files!
please help me and set the rules before we go sailing and not after as this will cause bad feeling been sailors and ruin friendships!

We have an updated rules document prepared. We just need to have it put up. Should be done soon.

You may post results from any of the programs GPS-Results, GPSAR-Pro and RealSpeed. If you have the settings in those programs adjusted correctly, they should give near identical results. I know Dylan is very careful to make sure KA-72 is tweaked to give the same results as those stand alone programs, but sometimes, e.g., when new GPS's come along, there can be further tweaking needed which he is very good with.

For someone new to using the technology, KA-72 is usually the best option.

For those who wish to use other tools to analyse their files in great detail, the stand alone programs can help you in that regard.

If you post from stand alone programs the onus is on you be be accurate and ethical and have to programs set up correctly (e.g.: Doppler, filters etc). You must also save your files to supply if requested which is done occasionally.

It's always a good idea, if in any doubt about you results, to run them by your team captain or someone else with lots of experience. Double checking never hurts.

I will check for updates

The main thing in the updates, is the inclusion of the Canmore and GW52 in the acceptable units list.
And mandatory posting via KA72, is probably a team captain thing, I've heard there are some team Captains that require this, and that's their prerogative, but it certainly isn't in the GTC rules.

Logit app for phones is for feedback but not accepted for posting data to GPSTC.

Recommended units are GT 31(discontinued), GW 52 (data is verifiable), Canmore GP102 ( in testing appears reliable but lacking error checking data).

Please keep a copy of your files as they may be required for verification. No file on request and result will be deleted.

We have some concerns about the accuracy, and therefore fairness of the use of the GPS-Logit app for posting in the GPS-TC using current model Android Phones.

The current policy of GPS-TC is that GT-31 should be used for posting Doppler based data (D) by individuals and team members vying for the top positions. The GW-52 is also approved for use in the same way using 5hz logging. GPS-TC also allows the legacy pre GT-31 GPS (mainly Garmin) that only produced speed results from positional data (T), but only for those sailors not contributing to team scores or in the upper section of a category.

The Canmore has been approved for use as it sits somewhere in between GT31/GW52 and older units. It has the potential accuracy of the GT-31 as it is a Doppler based device, but it has very limited verifiability.

If you are posting results that are counted in the team challenge in a competitive team you should inspect the results closely in a stand alone analysis program (GPS-Results/GPSAR-Pro/RealSpeed) for unusual results and errors. Preferably, team captains or the team 'tech guru' should help with this, and if there is any doubt the files should be sent to one of the GPS-TC technical advisors for a second or third opinion.

It would be great to have extra fields for a track link and details of equipment used and wind dir/strength in every post to GPSTC.

Thanks for the clarification Lao Shi, it's best to know one way or another what the current rules are. Considering I had no trouble using the app and my phone has worked flawlessly it is a bit disappointing it's not accepted.

I still think the app is a game changer so I've spent some time working on it and tweaking my phone so it now works with an external bluetooth gps, hopefully this will overcome some of the problems people have been having. It's up and running at 1hz so now I'm working on it to record at 5hz and 10hz rates. It's utilising a U-Blox gps chipset which is acknowledged as one of the most accurate out there. It's a fun project and should keep me busy during the winter months when the sessions on the water aren't as regular.

I do that anyway just for my benefit but it would make comparisons easier..

Well that didn't take long, I now have GPS Logit reading data at 5hz on the phone from an external GPS. Had to use a few secret handshakes on the phone and hidden directories but I got the little bugger to cooperate. Next step is 10hz, hopefully Manfred can change his code so we get the speed error estimates to be recorded.

Does every (or any) Android phone allow the error values to be read from the GPS chip ?
If so, which phones?
