Mind boggling distance. He used different kit throughout the 24 hours, but look at what he listed on the GPS site, guess that he spent most time on. Board from 2006 and sail from 2016.

Yes you do but that's not the why. It's more about the question " how far could you sail if you really tried "
So , a few of us tried . The record was 317km in 04 and we thought that was a long time way. Now we're talking about 1000km being possible on the perfect day.

Watching the Autumn worm moon over the golden lake and imagining sailing it,I think I know the why, and it's worth more than a car. I agree with Dave. Kato and Fred pushing each other, they'd never stop.

Just a few Km more - But on what would be considered "old gear" is impressive! If it isn't broken means its still workin!

in north europe at the summer solstice you would get about 17 hrs of light, makes it easier than here in Feb, Kato had to sail much longer in the dark

Proud of a local boy from Gippy being the world record holder, never in my life seen someone who is more dedicated and loves the sport as much, it is an incredible achievement in any conditions, more so when you don't have 17 hours of daylight. I'm sure he'll be back there to break the 1,000 when all is good in the world again.

Massive achievement!
Longer daylight is a great advantage for sure but the place is daunting in itself in howling Tramontane as the next stop is Africa. His report sounds a s if he was fully unsupported, sailing through the night in conditions developing from almost nothing to 40 knots gusts. I would be absolutely terrified like most sailors who as a general rule avoid the open sea altogether there and resort to the nearby salt lakes.
Respect to any of these sailors as being in the right place at the perfect time seems only to be a start for a 24 hour gruelling nightmare.

That's just nuts.
I do 70 km on a perfect day.

I just hope that Fred gets his record verified and doesn't leave it as is. Much easier when everyone plays on the same page.

True. Not much happening on records with GPS3 or WGPSSRC. The 24 hr is still mine from years ago. The major problem with Guinness is they have no expertise with gps requirements ie what one's work, errors and what is a legitimate track. In the end I never submitted mine. I'm not sure LG is easier as it has flat bits with bumpy bits to navigate and it's short. France has more daylight, longer runs and flat water. Both have shallows to miss too. Either way it's what you have access to. My first record was a Sandy Point, open ocean,sandbar's, bitey fish and long nights.

Sounds challenging, my PB is 200km on a single day, that took me a while to recover :) I have been told that GP3S stepped out the WGPSSRC a few years ago...

It is true that they stopped displaying the links to the relevant record web pages (even though they still existed). Many questions to them as to why went unanswered.
According to MVM, an agreement between MVM and Dylan was that MVM retained the rights to the WGPSSRC and GPSSS would continue to host it.

In any case, Kato's record was ratified by the WGPSSRC committee and is still the current official record @ 847km ,checked and adjusted for error by the WGPSSRC down to 836km (Deducted the worst case probable error range).

This new distance is truly a remarkable effort and achievement, but who knows if he really exceeded Katos record??? His distance is within the error margin of GPS to Kato's and no data has been submitted. At this stage I'd call it a draw.

Now you're getting really stupid.

Anyone can claim a World Record, there's an Australian "day" record recognised by one person.

There's a distance record recognised by Guinness World Records.

Mine is recorded by 3 approved GPS units, checked by a panel of experts , witnessed and published. I had no knowledge of the distance or even handled the GPS units when I finished. It is recognised by the group set up for such events. It was accepted as a New WORLD record which now might be a National Record.


As the heading states " Potential World Record "
I have no idea of who, what conditions Frederic is claiming other than the GPS3 post and the magazine article.

Please remember that we don't just have a whim to go for a long sail. Both of us spend a lot of time and energy in the gym and on the water to make these attempts possible. I am extremely proud of what I have been able to do. I'm impressed at what Frederic is doing so don't belittle the achievements of us with your statements and hide behind your user name.
Go to 1000km Frederick and rightly claim the crown.

And it will probably never be ratified as it's a Coros watch x 1 which is a real shame. So now we have 3 records to chase. Two are carefully checked ,validated using multiple gps's. One is not. Very sad outcome as I had hoped that this time it would be done right.
