Spotted (ex?) Pinna James Dinsmore having a dip at the PWA Slalom Event in Fuerte. He's doing alright too;

Nice to see even the best stuff up (occassionaly)

Antoine Albeau:

“Today was a real mixture for me with two solid results – a first, and a second. But, the huge catapult I had on the first leg of the second race final was a disaster. I had a good start and plenty of speed, but I think I was going a little bit too fast for the conditions. I saw a huge piece of chop that had doubled up with another bit just in front of me, and I said to myself ‘this is going to be painful’. I tried to remain confident and go straight over it, but I couldn’t! I broke my boom, my harness line, my mast, some cams, and a few battens! I’m looking forward to some more racing tomorrow though.”

If he reckons he was going too fast, then it must have been a humdinger of a crash.

The quality of the competition is amazing. Great to see some Aussies doing their thing in the PWA though.

Just finished the Fuerteventura event yesterday. I can highly recommend it as a brilliant event to be part of. As a first-timer to a PWA event it initially struck me what a serious business professional sport is. I guess most of the sailors have been training for months for the few events that there are this year and their livelihood depends on it. Everyone seemed to relax as the days went on though. The standard of the top 30 sailors was very high. The top ten were leaving even the likes of Pete Volwater (14th) and Jesper (Orth) (28th) for dead. From what I could see Jesper didn't have much luck on his side early on but came back strongly and was sailing very consistently during the second half of the competition. The problem is that even in the first round if you get a bad start or stall a gybe then you may well not get through to the next round. I was guilty of trying a bit too hard at times and catapulted on one first reach in one particularly high calibre first round when I was carrying 0.8m more sail than Dunkerbeck (OK so the alarm bells should have been ringing louder!!!!!! but I didn't have the full six sail quiver and was missing the required 8.6m sail) in a do or die attempt to make it into the second round. I have learnt a lot from the 10 rounds of slalom. Certainly my starts were well below par but I now have a clearer idea of how to get better.

Chris, I should say that I had the fasciectomy operation on my forearms in February and it has transformed my sailing. I certainly wouldn't have been in Fuerte if I hadn't had it done.

Best wishes to all in WA!
