Isn't there a short strip near the Newport power station ?
Yep, we call it willy speed track. The fence Matt was talking about is gone. I have done a 30kt peak here on freeride gear, you speedies could go a lot faster.
Best conditions:
-N-NE
-tide 0.4m and higher (refer to Baywx site @ rycv tide station)
-dont go after rain. The yarra flows beside the breakwall.
Hazards:
Big mullaway
Eels
Rays
Fishermen on rockwall
rocks on the strand side
knee deep mud
ships (at end of strip. You dont want to be waterstarting a speed needle when a ship is coming down the channel).
Regarding Altona, to the left of the boat ramp is a spot we call "the pines". Long shallow sandy beach with not many rocks, best in low-mid tide. Sail in NW (offshore wind) but stay in waist deep water. A friend did an unverified 40knt peak here. Note it is downwind from the mobil refinery, it can be smelly here.
