Only just seen it on FB, new 24hr distance record of 837km. Can anyone verify if true. Measured with a Suunto watch. ?????

Firstly ,a huge effort and an amazing attempt .Having been recorded by one device and no way of checking of its accuracy it isn't possible of being a world record to GPSSS. It is a world record for a Sunto watch and should be celebrated as such. Very few details of the effort but to sail distance takes a huge commitment before you get to the water and on the day. Much advice was given to him about his previous run and I had hoped that he would use multiple devices that could be checked and he would now have a legitimate world record. Sadly I am still the official world record holder by default at 650 km. I wish this wasn't the case.

For me there's always a few more cracks at improving my distance Pb and always happy to have a few more nutters pushing the numbers to the impossible

Maybe a dumb question, but... if you were going out to do a HUGE amount of distance, wouldn't you:- 1. Wear some sort of backup device/s and 2. Use approved devices to officially record an official result?

We have requested his tracks for validation, not sure what devices he has used besides the Suunto, so let's wait and see before making assumptions and claims....

Maybe he just went for a sail and was enjoying himself? Came back to shore after after 24 hours and went "Merde! J'ai surfe 837km!"

I heard he had 4 x GW60's.
Lost 2 when the bands broke
1 went flat After 60 min
and can't download the last one because the buttons don't work

I'm not sure I ever got a 6 hour session out of a GW-60, and certainly not much more. So 4 of them for a 24 hour attempt seems questionable, since you'll always want to use at least 2 devices at a time.

Button's that don't work are a typical consequence of pressing the buttons on the water or when the watch is wet. It can often be fixed by unscrewing the back plate, and removing corrosion on the little switches. But that will get him data for only part of the session.

It would appear so and it makes sense that anyone committing to a 24hr distance attempt would use an approved device.

Yes, I hope so, but if he only had one of them it can't be fully verified as an official record, which is a terrible shame.

But I would have pretty good confidence in the Single GT-31 if the record is complete and the results agree closely with his other devices.

It has certainly set a big mark though. It's got Kato excited again!

WGPSSRC is the ratifier for GPS records
or you can use GWR and their process for ratification. It just means that a standard has been followed and that someone else can complete on equal terms with the record.
