I press for 3 seconds and it just flashes the battery level. Usually it's just a simple 3 sec press and it dims and goes off. ??

You need to press for longer, then you shoul get a very long red light before it goes off

I'm up to 10 seconds plus and it still stays on?

Try pressing button down for 20 secs and see if red light shows to indicate it's shutting down. If it still doesn't then try charging it, maybe it's gone flat

No luck. It's just cycling through 1 red , 2 green so plenty of power.

I just can't get it to stop cycling.

Press HARD for 4-5 seconds. Longer than about 7 seconds and it goes into SAFE mode (for downloads)

Fixed..

I think..
The battery ran down overnight. I recharged it and then I managed to get it work and updated the firmware. Seems to work now.. Cross fingers..

Did you try to put it in wifi mode, quick double click. The shut down from there

Nah doesn't work..I can't get it to do anything again.. maybe it's just dead..

Does the charging plate light up when you charge it Sue? If so it's still got life

It wouldn't turn off or do anything last night so I let it sit overnight.. I charged it for a while this am and was then able to get it work.

It seems to need to be left O/N and then charged and it works ok for a while?

Ok, it might be a fault occurring in the off/on switch, I think it's a rare issue but if you'd managed to update to the current firmware last time, hopefully it's solved by a full charge, then try switching it on and off a few times to check the button is working

Don't know if I'm game to try turning it on and off..it's working atm..

I have my Garmin as backup but get better stats from the mini.
