With the Luderitz event drawing closer and a fundraiser this Friday to help support the Victorian Speed Team I thought I might share a little about my Luderitz campaign. I designed a few larger speed boards for Martin van Meurs mRx board brand afew months ago which he appeared to be pleased with and he has asked me to do a few more for the Luderitz event. We are doing 3 boards, slightly different sizes and bottom shapes.
The first of these is a 40 wide speed needle which is a fairly conventional modern speed board. This is my design with some input from Martin and his guys and is based on the 44 I did for him, very similar rocker and slightly reduced V . The second is similar to the 40, slightly different size but has some funky stuff going on in the tail. The third is a collaboration between Martin and myself using some ideas from Martins vast speed experience the result being a different rocker and V setup. It again has some different funky stuff going on in the tail.
These 2 we will share a bit closer to the event.
All three boards are being built at the moment in Martins mXr factory in Poland

I was absolutely stoked that Martin asked me to do this, it is really exciting and I am so looking forward to see how they perform. My fat a..se will never go over 50 knots ( unless in my awesome SSV Wagon, shameless Holden plug!!!) so it would be great to at least see my boards break the 50 knot barrier. Martin is also more than cool for the Aussie guys to see what they can do on them if they so desire.

You should be very proud Martin. It is awesome that the previous designs worked so well that MVM has asked for more. I look forward to seeing photos of the finished product and more importantly, seeing it do 50kn+ in October. Congratulations on your design.

Out of interest Martin, has MVM gone away from those stepped designs he had a few years ago for his speed boards. I know they're still done with the Simmer boards but never heard much about the MXR speed boards.

Sausage, On the previous 3 I designed him the 44/49 and 54, and this one yes no steps, these are pretty much my designs based on what I have been messing around with for the last few years. The other 2 for Luderitz I won't comment on yet, you will have to wait and see He is producing the Monster 66 in his factory in Poland, the stepped GPS/Slalom board which is apparently bloody good, very keen to take one for a spin at some stage.

Great stuff Martin. Looking good. I designed a few boards in the late nineties with CAD-CAM so if you'd like to hang out, drop some beers and tweak a rail PM me.

Has anyone tried (or are going to try) an asymmetrical board design?

Sausage, yep I thought about it a lot, would have modeled one if I had more time, but had too many projects on the go. Then I would have had to bribe Martin to build one.
Hey he will only put a starboard tack front strap on, that is asymmetrical!!!!

Would a board that narrow benefit from cut outs?

I spoke obviously alot to Martin about the track at Ludertitz and his experience there last year. Also looked at alot of vision of the guy;s sailing the trench and at the GPS tracks. What was obvious is that you need really good entry speed into the course to get a top 500 metre time. Martin was saying that the starting area was a bit gusty and it could be tricky to get going and the distance to the first timing gate is not that far. So what we thought could be an interesting approach is a board that is a little bigger and easier to get started, less of that short runup wasted trying to get going and more energy preserved for the run.Yet obviously the board also has to be fast at the bottom of the course.
So we did a slightly biiger board ( it,s still bloody small I reckon) we have added some cutouts to reduce wetted area in the tail resulting in the bottom surface area from 750 to the tail being the same for the 40 and the 42. The aspect ratio of the planing surface on the 42 ends up slightly higher and it has a touch more volume so it should be easier to get planing and accellerate a bit quicker, thats the idea anyway. As the wetted surface in the 'business end" of the board is the same it should have roughly the same drag related to surface area.

It is not often you get to play at a place like Luderitz so we though, OK, do one board that is safe..ish, and that is the 40, then try some stuff, so we have 2X42 wide boards with different shape cutouts and different rocker and V setups. I guess we will learn some s..t!!!!

Should we start a book on which one goes the fastest? hey if they float then I have done my job

martin the board looks great with a lot of hrs put in to design and detail but no mention about the rocker,I have noticed the fins for luderitz are wider with more rake, have you made any changes to the rocker to compensate for the board rideing flatter in the water, i have noticed the higher the rake the less lift , the trend has gone over the years from a vertical slalom to something like a c3 slingshot 30deg, and now a wider based 35 to 40 deg , the boards with the 35 to 40deg rake are better behaved but sit flatter in the water, have you done anything to the bottom to compensate or doesn't it matter

Love all the foot strap options. For those of us who don't fit the average speedsailor physique, it is nice to know you can set up the strap positions so the board works for you and your particular size.
