For West Australians "Is it worth Sandgropers doing the trip to LG atm?"
Water State: Right at this moment = Hmm....... Difficult, The water is nowhere flat as last year, While the spit is Flat, it's short and the wind angle can be a bit square for super speeds depending on angle of the wind, its the acres of dead flat water that are worth doing the 6,000km round trip for, and they dont exist at this moment so therefore for flat water your better off at Lilacs, Fangies, Liptons or Point Grey. Rating 3 star ***
Winds: when the SE'ter is blowing its probably still a superior wind to anything we get in WA, colder denser stronger and more consistent. Just dont seem to be getting a lot of them Rating 4 star ****
Socially: Fabulous, getting to meet GPSTCers from all over Australia, and new friends to be made Rating 5 star *****
Upon reflection of my fabulous sail at the spit on Tuesday, the wind was 25 to 30kts, and in similar winds last year on the acres of dead flat water I was doing 41's and 40's every run, pick the gust and pick your angle, the sail lightens up and you get sucked/pushed to warp speed, at the spit on tues the wind was a bit square, so the feeling was massive power in the sail feeling over powered and never lightening up or getting that phenomenal push/suck deep into the wind, was super exhilirating being on the edge, and I have never sailed that fast squarish to the wind, but the negative I was stuck in the 37/38/39kt range.
EDIT: What would I do if I'd planned a trip to LG, and the 10 day forecast doesnt look good, I'd look at the WA forecasts, and my first choice if the forecast was good in Albany, would be to Cancel the LG trip and go to Lilacs.
PS: Disclaimer = These are just my personal opinions, I am not sponsored by WA Tourism, sometimes there are other reasons to travel that are more important than cracking 40kts, SUCH AS = the experience, the adventure, seeing and experiencing new places, meeting new people, seeing old frinds, seeing family, and the list goes on................ However, if you think your coming to LG to crack your first 40kts, or sail in perfect conditions, hmmm think again
Thanks Joe, great report. While you are at it, would you drop your car on the Indian Pacific train again - it seemed like a superb way of doing it, but were there any cons? ( costs, trailers etc etc)
