I've added the ability to see yours (and others) tracks overlaid on a browser-embedded Google Earth plugin. (www.ka72.com/)

As I mention on the site, this slows analysis a little, but the kml files I'm generating for the Google Earth overlays are only generated once, so the hit isn't too bad.

Naturally, not every browser or OS is supported, but you can download the kml files and apply them manually elsewhere if you like.

I think that's enough smoke-and-mirrors for the moment. I need to go back to working on GPX support and fine-tuning some of the larger calcs.

Here's a screen grab from one of the tracks on the site.

The cool thing about the plug-in is that it is full Google-Earth, you can zoom, pan, and change the camera angle etc.

I'm only scratching the surface of what it can do so far.

That is very cool Dylan, very cool indeed

I was interested to zoom into my track (BHITCHCOCK 20090103 SBN), there are some spikes on there that stay the same size on the screen, regardless of how far you zoom in.

Check it out and see what you reckon.

It's amazing how easily you can create whiz bang applications on the web hey (Shh don't tell anyone)

Dylan,
Very impressive. 1 question though - How do you save the google image with track overlay? (right clicking mouse only gives you 3D pan option)

Good to see Alpha calculated in trackpoints for GT-11 users.

I use the Windows Vista Snipping Tool (www.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/)

There are other methods, such as using the PrtSc button then pasting into paintbrush. Plus there are plenty of cheap/freeware screengrabbers around.

Yes I saw that track when I was testing it out. That file has heaps of errors in it, which you can see when you first load it into Realspeed. My app doesn't do anything about them, and the kml smoothing algorithm wouldn't remove them either. The only points I filter out at present are the ones at 0,0.

Note that the URL that you click to access the overlay will work from any PC. You can email the link to someone else if you want to show them your run, and there is no extra processing involved. So instead of posting an image into GPSTeamChallenge, for instance, you could post an overlay link.

Sounds like a good candidate for automatic integration into the site

Wow! The possibilities just expanded.

Which prompts me to add: If you want any tracks removed from the site for any reason, just send me an email via the ka72 page.

Hi Dylan great job mate.

I have just uploaded a file with a big spike which gives me a 2sec speed of 49.87, I wish ha. In realspeed I can see it's invalid and the correct speed is 29.41
The Navi display had just over 51 knts

I have only uploaded the one file, Bob 21-01-09 Dutchies.SBN, if you're interested ?

Cheers,
Bob.

Thanks, Bob.

The file is a great example. Even after removing invalid points in RealSpeed, the spike remains. I'm hoping that when I have finished the site, it will be easy for you to share your file with competition officials, who can make the sort of individual judgement that is required with this sort of error. We won't be doing away with proper eyeballs in the near future!

Also with that file your Google link wouldn't work, I had the same prob just loading it into Google as a GPX file, what I had to do was select a point at the beginning of the sess and split the file there, save and then it will load into Google. I'd say this will be an occasional and unavoidable prob to a great feature.

It's good to be able to select someone else's file, hit Google and see where they sailed, as not everyone loads the occasional map on GPSTC, good stuff Dylan

Yes I saw that the file didn't appear to work. What is actually happening is that the file had some points at 0,0 near the beginning, and for some reason my filter wasn't cutting them out. I've updated the site and it should render correctly now. Take a look at http://www.ka72.com/viewge.aspx?fid=141&tid=0 and you should find it is fine now.

Now it works, I can't get my head around this stuff, you're just too smart Dylan
