I want to be able to see what sort of speed my best non alpha gybes are at..The ones that are too wide to register.. How do I find them on the track ( enlarge it to see) and get a read out and then how do you interpret that readout- i.e - what equivalent speed would that gybe be if it was counted as an alpha for 70m radius..? etc

I use GPS results for that purpose, input the SBN file and then in options you can increase alpha gap to 55,60,65 etc...

Bottom left of window will list all alphas in order of highest avg speed.

in realspeed, right click on alpha 500, click edit and change the proximity to whatever you want eg 70 m

Go to the 'proximity' box and type in the numbers for the circle you want to try. It is set to 50, just remember to set it back to 50 when you have finished playing around.

It is always reassuring when the great Sailquik agrees with you!

My additional tip is to create a NEW division altogether (call it Wide Alpha or Experiments). Then set it up as an Alpha Racing / 500m distance / 80m proximity. That way you can muck around with this setting without forgetting to change the Alpha 500 one back.



As a follow up question to this - Why are you guys interested in wider alpha 500's?

Am I correct that your wider gybes are faster? As looking at my gybe plots, so far all my gybes (fast or slow ones) have been "narrower" than the 50m - see below. I assume that is a big part of the reason I am slow?

Sue, bearhoover was talking about a totally different program called GPS Results. Sounds like you have worked out how to use Real Speed? Also for reference sake, your Real Speed must be paid for and registered version in order to edit the divisions.

No I haven't worked out how to use it yet.. so I can't check the 70m alphas unless its a paid version?? If so that explains things! Mines free.. Might have to upgrade.Also how do you get a google earth type overlay to show and upload in Realspeed..

It's very useful to know if you're going too wide, and very frustrating to get a pb alpha at 51m!!!! But you can then modify your technique once you know what you're doing wrong. Yep wider gybes are usually faster, because there's more down wind component in them.
Your example has quite a big upwind component so slowing it down.

In real speed I have 2 extra alpha divisions, one at 60m and the other at 70m. At a glance I can see if I've gone too wide.
GPSARP has a very handy distance slider for alpha separation, but as sailquick says, you have to remember to reset it.

The free (trial) version allows you to view the standard Alpha 500 (50m). If you want to analyse your tracks further (as per your original request to look for wider Alphas), then you will have to register it. It only costs 20 euros (about $30) so is well worth paying for!

As for Google Earth - that is mostly outside of this software. There are a few ways to get an overlay of your session onto Google Earth. The easiest way for me is to upload your SBN file using KA72, and click on the overlay there. If you need to analyse more than that, then you could use Real Speed to export the file and open it using Google Earth but that is probably more complicated than necessary.

Ok. I'll purchase it. Re Google Earth that's what i already do.. How come some people get a snazzier google earth- more 3D?

The easiest way I know of to view your tracks from RealSpeed in Google Earth is to save the track file as a .gpx file and them open it on GE.

In RealSpeed there are two ways to do this. Rather 'save as' or 'Export file as'. I prefer the latter.

In GPS-Results you can also save the trackpoints as .gpx and do the same. But GPS-Results also has a menu item to 'open in Google earth' which should automatically open GE and overlay the tracks. It is in both Mac and Win versions but called slightly different names in the menu in each.

Great tip about the Alpha guys, I created wider diameter in Realspeed and definitely found some faster alphas, that's given me something to work on, thanks

Guys, I'm opening the SBN file, but getting nothing (using RealSpeed). The SBP file, on the otherhand, gives me a full breakdown of my result (for walking around North Sydney during lunch break :P).

have you got a higher "min speed" set for the memory card that the data logger? It's possible you're not walking faster than the memory car "min speed", but are for the data logger.

That's interesting, somehow your alpha division has been deleted. You have to recreate it, I'll need to check how to do that, be back later, (unless somebody else beats me to it)

Ok, right click on "divisions" , click on "new", you then should get an edit box appear.
In "division name" type Alpha 500 x 50"
Then in "calculation results" click on "Alpha Racing".
Next make sure distance is 500m and proximity is 50 and average 1 run.
select "doppler if available"
Then all you should have to do is click OK.
That sets up your standard alpha.
To get a wider proximity, repeat the whole procedure, except call it whatever you make the proximity, then instead of the 50 above change that to whatever you decide on.

I've just noticed you also need to create a Nautical mile division.
Same as before except this time select "distance" and type in 1852 where it says "metres" and call it NM

Thanks. Done .Ok I've done 20.45 on 70m radius gybes so need to concentrate on tightening them..
