This arvo Hardy suggested, as it was very low tide, we remark the rocks at hardy's run.

Here's the results. (Just a guestimate, should have had a gps with us to mark the posts, but of course neither of us thought of that)




At the left of pic is the Navara boat ramp, the single rock marker is just out from the unpowered boat ramp.
The rock garden, (beware in here, at low tide the whole area is just a mine field of rocks, actually I think it's one big reef, with high spots), is opposite the big green roofed shelter in Len Howard conservation reserve. And the outside post should now include Claude's rock, (we had a good look around and all we found was big floating weed islands, I guess there could be more rocks under these, but it's impossible to tell)
To the right of the pic, there's a shallow area at the point where the shore goes into a bay at alpha land. There's a pole here marking the outer limit of this area.

So on a sufficiently high tide, there's a rock free run on the inside of the rock garden, if it isn't deep enough to go thru here, make sure you go outside the southerly post. If you can't point that high STOP!!!!!! before you cross the line between the south west and north west posts.

I was wondering if you could overlay green lanes for high and low tides, red lanes for same, green = good red = baaaaad! I imagine the place is sailed in a SWer or Sthly.

Only because I want to understand where the inside are is that you refer to, I have not sailed there as I am scared at smashing kit but looking at the place it offers great long reach sailing, I feel I need this experience and really want and appreciate your awsome info and warnings.

I get the instructions written but I just hope my interpretation is correct, your lanes will confirm this for me.

Wish we'd had a camera the whole area marked was littered with rocks, the only reason we haven't hit them everytome, is thru sheer luck, there's the odd 1 metre line thru that is clear and I think we have arsed that line on many occassions and knowing the place I can see why with wind angles etc, but to risk it knowing how many rocks are there is crazy!

Not quite, we've shifted both of them, the bottom left one further left, and the bottom right a fair way further out, to include Claude's rock. (You'll probably be quite surprised just how much further out it is)

We moved them so that no rocks (that we could see) were outside the line between posts.

It's a bit hard Mintox, the area between the shore and the rockgarden is the inside channel, and most of it yesterday arvo was ankle to knee deep. Whether it's safe enough to sail depends on your fin depth as well as tide height. We normally judge by how much water is at the Novara entry point, if it's over the fallen logs, and into the washed out area, it's ok for 25cm fins

I read correctly, so blasting directly out between the "Single rock and the SW corner of the rock garden is ok? Do you have a channel marker or similar that you line up with as you head out? Not the one you hang sails on I hope Or was that Hards???

I know Im sounding like a sook but I have very limited funds, so if I destroy any kit I will be buggered

Looking forward to a run down there, I have my sons 2nd birthday party from 3pm Sunday so I am toast for the Mandurah drags

Now you mention it, there's a post I haven't marked, out from our launching spot, east of the boat channel.
If there's enough water to sail before you get to this post, you can probably head down the inside run from there. If you have to wade out past that post, then don't try the inside run.

decrep did you move the old markers out or just add new ones, i may have to feel out some new safe lines when i return as my old reference point may have been shifted, otherwise good work making the run safer for all.

Bundy we did both, added some new ones on the inside, and shifted the outside 2 so that Claude's rock is included. So yes, if you want to stay safe, you may need to change your line a bit.

We've also done a few runs out to the platform, and that run is way out side the markers

If you wanted a google image of where's safe, if you got everyone who DIDNT hit a rocks gps track from next Sunday and put them onto google that should pretty much color in all the safe bits.

People have been sailing in that rocky area for ages, as hardy said, it's just luck whether you hit one or not. So you could have several tracks through the worst of it that don't hit anything.
But if you tried to follow them, guess what will happen!

I know what you mean, I used to be a bit of a rock seeker, if there was one within reach I would hit it.

Years ago at Nanga south of shark bay where it was waist deep white sandy bottom as far as the eye could see I managed to find the one rock. A lump of concrete someone had dropped to anchor a boat too.

Anyone everyone who hits a rock at Hardies post that bit of your gps track - then we should have a map of the known bad spots.
