I have google earth plugin on my computer but when I try to open the gps files it doesn't come up as an option in the possible opening program box. How do I get it to show so I can choose it to open the file and get a track.

I'm now using gpsvisulizer.

You can upload any of our GPS formats to it and it can create tracks colour coded for speed.

I can't use ka72's google overlay because it doesn't support Ubuntu.
But if you want to upload to Google earth directly you need to save your file as a .gpx first. Then alter the file settings in google earth from "google earth" to "GPS"

If you specifically want to use google earth, i get to work easily via ka72 by clicking on the "overlay link" icon (little green world looking icon) then that opens the track details and the Cesium map with the sessions track and map. You will notice "(KML)" written in blue after the location and date. If i click on "KML" it opens up a window with the option to "Open with" or "save file". Just click "open with" then choose "google earth" as the opening program and that should do it all for you. (I use Firefox as the browser) Hope that makes sense

Try to Open Google earth, then File-Open and select your file...

You can't open an SBN file in GE, it needs to be GPX. Convert your SBN file using NaviLink II or another program like GPSResults or RealSpeed. When opening in GE, you need to select the correct file type you want to open, otherwise when you're browsing your computer folders the GPX files won't show up. Once the track is in GE, you can then right-click on the track in the left window (you might have to expand it out using the plus button), choose properties from the right-click menu and make the line weight 1.0, which by default is 6.0.

Hope that helps, but PM me if you need more help (with Navilink or whatever conversion program you decide to use). NaviLink is free btw.

I'm not sure of this Sue, but if you only have the google earth browser plugin, not the google earth programme, you may be able to open the file from your browser, but as mentioned a .sbn file won't work, it has to be .kml or .gpx

Hi Sue, GPSvisualiser is good.

GPSvisualiser accepts SBN files too, which is great for you coz you don't need to convert anything from your GT31.

You can then output into Google Maps (and screenshot the tracks). Alternatively, you can output to KML or KMZ file and manually open the file in Google Earth. Or you can click the KMZ link and (if you have Google Earth full application installed) it will open GE with your tracks. Once in GE you can save the image easily.

Ok I got the file in real speed and changed it to a GPX file and put it in a folder on the computer. I then opened Google Earth and clicked on open and went to find the file but it doesn't show..?? I found another file and got the tracks but not sure what I did... It wasn't a GPX file..

Ok. Thanks I got it to work using this method.

This is what I got when I saved a printscreen image. How do I get rid of the row of pics at the bottom and the little panel top LHS? Also what do the black tracks mean? I also got 2 red bits???

TO DOWNLOAD A KML FILE THAT CAN BE OPENED IN GOOGLE EARTH:
When you are looking at a track details page (e.g. www.ka72.com/Track/t/155959 ) you can use the blue KML link


Download the file then open it with Google Earth.

GOOGLE EARTH PRO is now available for free from Google for Windows/Mac at:

THE COLOURED SECTIONS OF TRACK
these relate to different peak speeds. The black bits are the 5x10s. The red bit is the 2s peak.
You can hide and show these in GOOGLE EARTH by expanding the layers and ticking and unticking the boxes there. See below.

Note next to each box is a little triangle of circles where the circles are the colour of the track segment in Google Earth.



If you have another program you prefer to use, you can just download the original track file from ka72 also.

The download button appears on the search results screen for any track the owner has marked as Public (or Anonymous tracks less than a week old.)

These files can then be loaded into many other applications.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Google Earth doesn't run on Ubuntu, but KA72 should run fine on Ubuntu. The overlay on KA72 is not using the Google Earth plugin any more. Provided you have an HTML5-capable browser, it should work fine.

Well how about that, just goes to show how long ago I last tried it.
But google earth does run on ubuntu, it's just the browser plugin that doesn't, for some strange reason.

Thanks. The only way I know how to save a pic of the google earth tracks is to take a screenshot but then you end up with all the extra boxes etc. Is there a way to save the track image other than a screenshot?

you can open the screenshot in 'Paint' or any other suitable app and crop it

In google earth, you can do >file >save >save image. that will just give you an image of the google window.
