After getting wet last week my GPS is only partly working. It will only turn on with the external charger, and is not getting satellite reception, though it will scroll through the other screens normally.

Does anyone have any experience with Locosys repairs? Is the time and cost worth sending it off? The unit is out of warranty and 18 months old.

Anita, Benny has dealt with them before:

I got mine wet once and couldn't get it going again - sounds similar to you I occasionally got it to fire up with external power. Ended up getting another one

having problems also...brand new Gt-31, got 2 days of logged data downwinding and then screen display completely disappeared. I'm not sure what has happened but suspect that i may have "steamed" it as left it on the dash in the sun....apparently a very naughty thing to do

funny thing though ...it still is logging and i've been getting the data directly from the SD card, as the only thing still working on the gps is the backlight i've been in contact with lycosystems these past few days so i will let you know if i have any joy with it.

Sounds like you've fried the display, if it's not fixable, could be used as a back up, in a helmet or on the back.

I sent off my GPS unit to locosys after contacting them by email. They charged $20 to examine it and sent a full email report with photos of the damage, which was major and unfixable. They have offerred to replace the unit at a discounted rate for $133 AUD which includes the $20 examination fee, and postage. Very good service I think.

I received my replacement GPS today. 6 weeks turn around since I mailed the broken one, including holidays for Christmas and Chinese New Year.

Thanks to Windsurfing WA for lending me a spare unit in the meantime.

I experienced really great customer service from Locosys myself, and would recommend anyone with problems to go through the proper route of getting in touch with the head office (hong kong I think).

My old one wouldnt turn on unless plugged in, sods law it was perfect conditions as well and I had no gps! Still had a great sail though.

I tried everything, checked all connections etc. The head office went through a routine series of checks with me and concluded the best thing would be for me to send it. Unfortunately it was nearly 3 years old and I had cracked the case getting it open due to rusted screws (always double bag them now). I decided it wasnt worth the cost as a mate was selling a virtually unused one for £50 and the postage return was about £40 without the repair costs.

I was really impressed with all the help and advice they offered, especially considering it was so far out of warranty. Made a very refreshing change to a lot of companies nowadays.
