Is there a function on the GT31 where you can set it to countdown for an hr and then either have large numbers or an alarm? I'm hopeless.. When i use my watch I note the start time for my sailing hr and then forget it..

Just buy a cheapo GPS running watch (<$100) then you can watch the time and distance during your hour.
Don't even think about considering that you could post to GPSTC with the device, but it will measure your 1 hour distance pretty accurately.

I use my old Garmin 310XT, I have had it for 9 years, still waterproof, use it at least 3 times a week. Battery still lasts for 18 hours.
You can buy them second hand on ebay for next to nothing,

A watch would work too.

I just check the time on my watch when I start. If you have an analogue watch you don't need to remember numbers, just where the hands were pointing. Then I look at the watch from time to time. It is amazing that the last 15 minutes take so much longer than the first!

I must be going senile.... Last few times I've done an hr after the first 15mins I've been buggered.. My current watch is a small digital that's hard to read. Bad contrast on the face.

I make sure when I buy a watch, it's got huge numbers and good contrast for that very reason.

But most digital watches have lots of alarm modes and timers, can you set yours to an hour.

If ladies watches don't do it, I think my watch was about $20 to $30 from Kmart. just wear a big mans watch for the session.
