Theoretically, yes, but that would create a bit of extra work and (more importantly) a few more places where things can get messed up (since I'd have to also update the download links every time).
As Mike has pointed out, you can always check the version from within GPSSpeedreader by using the "About" menu. On Windows and Mac, you can also check the version of the application in the Explorer resp. Finder windows. As for the dowloaded ZIP archives, you can compare the file date with the release dates listed on the download page (
