Just tested Gavin's LG, he's getting back to me with model number, but it's not recent because it had v4.1.2 in it, he's had to upgraded it so logit loads.
It's resolution is .019kts

I'm testing this in real speed, by clicking on the doppler speed column header. This sorts the column by speed, then it's just a matter of scrolling through the column to find the minimum difference between speeds.

I confirm my Sony Xperia also has Doppler resolution of 0.486 kts.

Interestingly, the trackpoint data resolution comes up as 0.005 to 0,006! But there is no way it is that accurate.

Gavin says the LG was in his lap while taking it for a drive in his car, so not a good sky view at all.
Number of sats varies from 0 to 10 but most of the time there's 8 and the tracks look good, so this could be a possibility.

Most phones use assisted GPS. This was put together when the yanks needed better 911 emergency location and uses mobile phone towers to assist in triangulation.
the joy of android means that you have way too many hardware platforms. Some will only have assisted GPS and will require an internet connection and number of phone towers to anywhere near remotely accurate. Some are even reliant on google wi-fi positioning system.
neither of these systems work well outside metro areas and are dependant on your phone carriers ability to supply accurate aGPS information.
so, in a nut shell, if it does not have a autonomous GPS capability (functions without a data connection), it's next to useless.
put the phone in airplane mode, then run your tests again and check the accuracy.

So the 18,000 odd types of devices will run a multitude of hardware permutations, such as CPU and GPS chips. Some will be of far greater quality than others.
if your trying to define a standard, you would be better of choosing a model of phone that everyone has to use, otherwise there are far too many permutations. That's why the GT-11/31 etc. are a great leveler as everyone uses the same device.

It's obviously going to be too hard to test all the posibilities and OK some and black list others. But I think it's a worthwhile project to list the ones that are tested, at least their max resolution.
This was never going to be completely level playing field anyway, and for a great number of GTCers, there's not going to be any world shaking numbers.
The phone is such a great device, I think the better ones should be allowed for posting purposes, even the Xperia's numbers have come up very close to my GW52 so far.

It's probably best if the top end of the game posts with devices that log the sdop numbers.

I think the easiest way to confirm a device suitability is to ensure all testing is a level playing field.
airplane mode on (or no SIM sailquik)
decide a tolerance level
analyse and your done.

that will confirm if the GPS in the device is accurate enough.
I fully agree the rules should be different at the top end of town. It's great that GPSTC is still inclusive and being able to use your phone is one less financial barrier to having a go.

I see what I did now. Most of the cheaper ones (under $70) also don't have a 480X800 screen resolution. If you select 480X800 and 854x480 resolution it comes up with 3 phones that don't have a GPS

Andrew, I also have not inserted a sim but my Xperia says I can make emergency calls. I have looked at the battery usage and most was for radio frequency so it
seems the sim only allows for you to be identified and billed etc. whilst the phone always remains connected to (or pings) the cell towers. You sometimes read of people writing that you can be tracked even with your phone powered off so I guess this is what they are referring to.

If you type in *#*#4636#*#* you can get the phone info on the Xperia. I turned off the radio and my battery life appears to be longer. I guess if I get stuck out in the middle of nowhere and need to make an emergency call I can just turn it back on.

OK. Thanks Mike. I guess those are not sold normally in Australia. Good to know one must look out for cheap Android phones which don't have the required GPS in them though.

you have to be really careful when ordering a phone on gearbest, for the life of me I was sure the one I'd chosen had a gps....

arrived her, didn't have one.... (doesn't really matter I gave it to my mum and it was 60$)

same thing for language, was pretty sure I'd seen french but no french in the menu.

Well that's great to know, the site appears to be professional, but you always have your doubts.

Looking for ways to measure the sensitivity of the phones I discovered there is a strong correlation with the number of sats in view.

The Alcatel One Touch Evolve 2 shows 10 or more sats on a consistant basis. The speed resolution is 0.019 knots. The average difference between doppler and track point results for the 5 X 10s is 0.65% (Trackpoint higher).

The Motorola Moto X drops below 10 sats on a regular basis. The D-TP difference is also higher.
