Anita Manfred is well aware of this problem, I don't think he can gain control over the phone's normal functions, to lock the screen.
It was at his suggestion I've encased my phone in hard plastic. It was how he solved the problem at La Franqui when his unit played up in high speed crashes.

I've just reduced and rounded the edges of a Ferro Rouche chocolate container, and used a bit of foam to shield the buttons and volume control. So far this works well, but it's then not possible to change settings without removing phone from pouch.

Personally I just turn the screen off and I'm fine....

Sean, that may be the problem with your files.
For the Xperia anyway, if the screen goes off it goes into some strange battery saving mode and there are big holes in the data, a bit like yours.

Windsurfing - Slowboat recorded 38.5 2 sec, but of the mere mortals the best 2 secs were around 34 knots, with 5 X 10 sec ave of around 32 knots.

It was not easy conditions for speed on Saturday despite a lot of wind.
I'd say your 32.2 was pretty good. Is that windsurfing or kiting?

Accidentally started mine today counted down from 300 (5 mins)

Had a small sail yesterday and did some comparative testing.

2 x GT-31 in helmet, GW-52 and Alcatel Pixie in Paqua on left arm, Sony Xperia in H2OAudio bag on right arm.

I am not sure why the reported SDOP is higher in the GW-52 but it did not have as good exposure to the sky as the GT-31's in the helmet.

The results from the two Phones are very similar in most categories and within the error margin of the GT-31's except in the Max, which is an unreliable figure most times anyhow.

The GW-52 sometimes, but not always, produces slightly higher speeds just because it is 5hz and can find a better section of the speed curve with 5 times the resolution.

I still feel very uneasy about the relative lack of verifiability of the Phone app results when errors can occur.

I find the Sony a lot easier to use than the Alcatel. The touch screen is more responsive and the system menus and controls just seem to work better.

For some reason I need to investigate, the continuous speed talk did not work in the Alcatel, but occasionally it did announce the 'last run'.

At what stage do you choose just one device? It must be a pain to go and check 5x results.

Daffy's doing us the service of trying to make that decision. But it looks like one device may never be enough for the very serious speed freak. There's always the advisability of a back up, and if you get 2 identical results from different devices it does add a lot of credibility to your claim.

It's hard to go past the benefits of gpslogit, but until there's a phone that saves the error data, it's not going to be good enough for records.

I don't know much about it but the thingsie could be enough for most people, although I don't think it has speed chat.

Having trouble with display turning off?
It's mainly caused by accidental activation of a phone function.

Here's my wife's solution. And the first bit is the best part, go to the supermarket and get your self a plastic box of ferrero rocher chocolates.




Do what you think is appropriate with the chocolates, and mark out the outline of the lid on a suitable piece of foam. (I've used a pool tile from clark rubber, also handy for footstraps and foot pads)




then mark the outline of the phone, leaving space at one end for the earphone plug. Make sure to include the outline of any external controls, to keep any pressure of them.




Then route out the space for the phone, leaving a mm or so of foam to hold everything together.





Next come the choc box lid. The lip is a bit sharp and could damage the waterproof pouch, so I sand this right back and smooth with fine sandpaper





then it should all go together and fit in a drypack or paqua midi

There is a great possibility option of getting external Bluetooth loggers (preferably with 10hz UBlox chips) to send really great data to the phone and process it in the App ignoring the Phone substandard GPS. There used to be this logger from Wintec http://www.wintec.com.tw/EN/o_202.html which is perfect for the job, but it is discontinued. :(

I am trying to find if there are any others available. We need one with a UBlox GPS Chipset

76km is VERY long drop!!

I was abducted by Aliens once during a windsurfing session. It was so stealthy I didn't even notice it, and they obviously wiped my memory after they did god knows what to me. (actually, that could explain a few things........ )

Anyhow, they neglected to wipe the evidence off my GPS which showed that they took me to Antarctica at 10,000 Kt's and returned me to Sandy Point seemingly only a couple of seconds later, after doing some backwards time travel to cover their backs.

Bloody sneaky those Aliens......

Gw-52, GT-31 in Helmet
Sony Xperia/GPS-Logit on right upper arm

Error margins on the GW-52 much better and comparable with it in the Helmet with the GT-31. I think this good view of the sky is much more important for the GW-52!

Max speeds. 5hz finds a better peak as usual:



Nautical Mile: Very close between GT and GW, Within error margin for Logit but consistently just a little higher.

2 second: All close and well within error range.



!0 second: GT/GW very close. Logit on margin of error range and high

5 x 10 seconds: All very close. Shows the value for rankings of this category once again



Alpha 500m: I would expect the 5hz GPS to get a slightly better result and have seen this most times. Sony Xperia Phone does not look so good for Alphas, possibly due to poor resolution. I will have to include the Alcatel in the next tests for Alphas.

I gave gps logit a go today and unfortunately it turned out to be not very accurate. I knew something was up when the chick told me I was doing 25 knots on my formula gear when I was doing 22 at the most. The speech dropped out after a few minutes and refused to work again. I have tested the headphones, waterproof bag and the phone itself and all are working. I put my phone on the dash of my car and ran the app for the short trip home and it was telling me 28 knots when my speedo was reading 40 km/h. The speech worked again but dropped out again after less that 2 minutes. I loaded up the sbp file into realspeed and the tracks looked like some sort of frankensteins monster. Dropouts all over the place and tracks all over the place when it was tracking.

So it seems like the gps in my phone is crappy. My phone is a Huawei ascend y550. It's a prepaid cheapie. That would explain the inaccurate speed and I guess the speech loss must be related to the dropouts as well.

The app seems very good my biggest problem is actually using a smart phone for this job at all. It's a bit of a nightmare the dam screen is hyper sensitive and it was starting to get on my nerves after a while. The second lesson I learned after have a decent phone is a solid case is a good idea. I think I'll stick to my trusty old gt31 the smart phone thing is just to annoying.

One of the issues with GPS-Logit is nothing to do with the very fine programming that Manfred has done, it is the variation in phones that can make or break your experience.

I have said it before and will repeat it. The H2Oaudio case/armband is also a big part of my getting on well with the phones and GPS logit. It is the best waterproof solution I have used, and especially made for these medium sized phones. I still have to careful not to hit the screen or buttons while sailing though. It would be nice if it was possible to put a 'screen lock' on the phones.

For me the best thing about it is that I can now have my high accuracy GT-31/GW-52's in my helmet (where I can't easily see them but where they get optimum reception) and use 'Logit on my arm for all the feedback I have ever dreamed of. Last Saturday was the first time I was able to get to the end of a run and see what my NM result was straight away without guesswork. Also fantastic for Alpha feedback, not to mention the live speed talk which I am finding is fine even without earphones.

Andrew, which model H20 Armband are you using, Online I've found about 3 different ones varying in price between $20 and $200. But a Queensland kiter had this one

I have also seen the issue with the sound dropping out after sailing for a while. The time was longer, though - it worked great for maybe an hour or so, then it started being unreliable. For example, it would occasionally start announcing a 26 or 27 even when the minimum was set to 20. At other times, the sound would remain off, even though I was clearly going above 20.

It's possible that this is linked to the battery levels getting low. Once levels get too low, I get a "plug in charger" message, and the screen shuts off shortly thereafter.

I picked up one of the Sony Xperia E1s from Dick Smith for $30. Its locked to the Optus network. I've read online it can be unlocked. I bought it as it was about the cheapest phone to replace a phone I broke when it fell out of my pocket onto concrete.

I have not tried this GPS software and probably won't until my GT-31 dies. However I have used the maps for GPS turn by turn navigation. It worked okay but said it lost its signal a few times.

Thanks Roo. I had realised that but you have to choose one category for the speed talk 'last run', and I was set on top speed!

I also think it needs a slightly longer delay (another second or two) between dropping below the speed threshold and announcing the 'last run'. There can be be a bit too much external noise and other stuff going on when stopping after a fast run and by the time it settles down the last run announcement has finished. Or it might be better to just have it announce 'last run' again after a 5 second delay. (That is not using the earphones - with the earphones, I guess it would not be an issue).

Use it anyway in conjunction with the GT-31. It gives great immediate feedback!

Thought I'd come up with an idea to improve the pixie3 reception yesterday. I noticed on my starboard speed runs, my head was almost over the phone on my right arm, so after lunch I wore it on my left arm instead. It did seem to give the phone a better look at the sky, but didn't make a much difference in results.
Here's a typical comparison between the pixie3 and the gw52 2second speed graph. the two track each other fairly well until I get close to 35kts, then the pixie seems to go to sleep and ignores my slow down.

In view of the above had a closer look at Sunday's session.
Here's the best 2s on the pixie (red)




and here's the xperia's best 2s (yellow)




and here's the gw52's best 2s (blue)




So all 3 are different runs, the pixie's is higher than the GW52 because the speed hangs on too long, and the xperia's because of false peaks
Interestingly for the GW52's both phones are behaving themselves

That looks to me like there may be some sort of velocity prediction filter going on with the phones, possibly tied up with some sort of dead reckoning filter for position. On the GW-52 peak the acceleration is a bit slower/smoother so whatever it is may not be kicking in.

It should be easy to test by looking at comparisons in steady state speeds.

In any case it is a worry for the competition if these errors influence the team score unrealistically.

I have just been looking at some Bluetooth GPS dongles, actually I was looking for any that might have a U-Blox chip to send the high accuracy data with SDOP to GPS-Logit, but it might be worth experimenting with a cheap, non SDOP GPS dongle to get better quality data into the phones than their built in GPS's can supply. Many of these dongles are quite cheap so it might still be an attractive option for those who want to use the Phone as their primary GPS device for posting. At the moment, it is not looking so good for at least a couple of phones as they are, and anyone with a GT-31, GW-52, or even a Canmore, should be posting that data if they can.
