Ever got frustrated by the wind arriving just as the sun kisses the water, leaving you to pack up in the dark with out getting wet. I have.
Try this......Night Speed sailing

Thanks to Andrew from AyUp in Queensland we have the solution. These lights are light weight, very strong, punch out heaps of light, water proof and last 6hrs. I have three sets of lights and helmets for people to try at the SHQ Event. The photos are of my set up on the helmet.
First sailing test will be on Monday night (Wind wiling)
Who wants to jump into the future
All the light details can be found at www.ayup.com.au They also work on bikes too

How do fishermen attract 'life' at night?

You're game

btw how heavy are the batteries? Are they LEDs or incandescent?

geez Kato, as if you didn't look enough like Darth Vader in your helmet now you're going to resemble a Jawa! You got some secret Star Wars fetish you need to tell us about....

They run of a car battery, you need to strap that to the back of the board!!

You'll get arrested. They should be green on the right and red on the left.

Ha ha i actually know of some guys that were camping out at Boggy Lake (in the middle of nowhere) and were sitting at the campfire around midnight. Anyway they were all annoyed that the wind was so good and they wernt sailing, so they headed out anyway in the dark lol..... all they did was just sail back to the fire each run and they were happy.

The weight of the batterys are
3hr Lithium Battery 70 grams
6hr " " 130 grams
Cree xre led light set 50 grams-output 300 lumen (Real Bright)

Yes i should have red/green lights but as the lights are soo bright you carn,t see them and the sharks at the Pit keep the fun police off the water at night.

The big fish biting problem....don,t fall in

My son already has his eyes on the helmet for Star Wars

If your at the SHQ BBQ this Sat I will have the sets there for people to have a look and play with.On Monday night there will be some stuff for people to try if your keen.Byo fish food

Just tape some red and green cellophane over the side lights, your set and legal

Cheers

Used that technique for ecology studies, monitoring birds during a breeding season

It might dull the intensity (or at least the amount of water lighted up in front of you), but play around with maybe one of the lights per side to get a good safety/legality/others vision of you to your vision mix

And at worst you could add another light to the array for a night colours array

You'll have to write up how they go and what exactly to use to attach etc, as this is the first i've seen of this sorta setup (it might ruin the UK's Fatface Night Windsurfing Festival!!), i've been wondering how to make the most of those night fronts coming thru

Can't see much point dism. There is zero night traffic at the spot and very unlikely to be more than a couple of sailors. I think I will carry a few light sticks though in case of gear failure.

Oh that is just too cool! I've wanted some of those Ayup lights for my bike for some time.
But... Errr... i take it that tinted visor can slide up???
(Or do we just stand on the beach and sing "I wear my Gath Visor at night", a la Corey Hart??)

You might want to try red filters for another reason. Dark adaptation. White light will destroy your night vision even if it is reflected (waves /sandbar).

Had talked to Slowie about this a year or two ago as all our winter fronts seem to come through at night (he was up for it). At that time I used to wear a helmet which I tried to modify but I just made a mess of things (both helmet and lights).

Kato's solution is far more elegant.

Sorry, but making some green and red will not make them legal, since you will be able to see all of them from the same angle.

There are quadrants that each of the different colours must be visible from, and with them all facing forward, they do not satisfy this requirement.

I thought that below a certain size of vessel all you needed was a white light?

Your right Harrow, I remember the boat nav. rule book now

Yeah, this is true isn't it (but still prob need at all quadrants)

In that case, you guys are set
Might be handy but for an event in a busier waterway (unless this is Pit specific kit)

Yeah, it might be like looking into someones headlights with that array around your head

Trialled it out yet Kato? Keen to see what works.

I was only kidding about the colours guys. I think that as far as the cops are concerned, if you have a bright light that can be seen from all directions you are legal.

Those Ayups look pretty sweet. Will they take a good washing?

One advantage with the Gath Helmet is ya carn,t hear a thing. Sing away oh cherub and the lights on the bike are amazing, worth every cent

"Those Ayups look pretty sweet. Will they take a good washing?"
Yes the lights are water proof ,but yet to be tested in salt water on a board

"Trialled it out yet Kato? Keen to see what works."
This weekend will be its virgin runs and you can get a red filter for them

Kato, how about some glow sticks or lights to mark where the really shallow bits are?

That would let you run along in between some poor fool wallowing in the water and the shore with a few more mm's precision

Next time I'm down there I think I will wear a flare even in daylight, just to help you out!

I think I might have to kneel in the really shallow water next time and see just how shallow that board of yours can really go

Next time I will also wear a helmet... and some chain mail, an impact vest, some kevlar body armour, and probably some floaties just for safety. Of course the GPS will be well protected too. You should see this new case I got for it...

Good luck with the lights.

I wonder whether kato has got his head lights on at the moment?
It should still be blowing nicely down at the pit and with a bit of luck he's up to some good distance.
