I need some simple answers to the following.
I'm using a Garmin 201, G7towin to download and Realspeed to view the tracks.

1. How many times do you need to delete invalid to get real speeds?
2. I seem to have to delete tracks individually to get realistic speeds but how far do you go?
The 48s etc are pretty obvious that they are not real but in the 30s I'm not sure which are real & how low to go.
In the Alpha250 it's telling me I've got a speed of 46 and a max speed of 26, surely the 26 46 is wrong, this is on the same line.
Meanwhile the 2 sec is 37, still unbelievable.

The other problem is zooming in each window it seems you have to repeat the command multiple times and them you can lose it completely when recalculating.
The coloured lines seem to come & go or don't always work.

Any simple answers much appreciated.

The simple answer is that once RealSpeed marks them as invalid you should not have to delete anything.

My guess is that you either have a filthy dirty track (lots of errors though bad reception) or your filter settings are either turned off or incorrectly set.

Send you track to me and I should be able to see what it is and send back the results that I get.

The issue with Pauls track was 'Auto' trackpoints setting.
Just a reminder to those using the Garmin Foretrex and Geko GPS's to make sure you have them set to record trackpoints every 2 seconds.

Better send an email to Antoine Albeau, he has his Foretrex set on auto as well!

Antoine should know better! He also should know better than to be using the Foretrex! I guess it gives him and excuse not to post on GPS-SS.........

Maybe Antoine isn't as tech savvy as others and finds the Foretrex easy to use. To see his max speed on each run it's ideal. He may be more interested in breaking the official 500m record than posting on gpsss, but his tracks are posted elsewhere on the internet.

As you will see Antoine had his gps on auto and the info is less than illuminating.

Yes, I can understand gamesmanship and wanting to keep detailed information from competitors eyes. A bit OTT on my opinion......... but what do I know...?

You never have to delete points. You can mark segments as invalid in the trackpoint grid to ensure they are not used in the results. Another option is to set the max speed in the Tools/Options to what you know is a realistic max. It will automatically invalidate anything equal to or more than this max.

This will be due to a spike that RealSpeed has not been able to detect. Simply mark one of the points invalid and RealSpeed will ignore that turn.

When you delete or mark a point invalid then RealSpeed needs to recalculate the results which forces a view refresh. I have been considering a method of allowing the recalc to be turned off for situations where a lot of editing is required, but even I dont see this often enough to worry about it. If you are getting bad tracks then something is prohibiting the GPS from getting a good signal. Ensure you dont have the GPS covered with a wetsuit or anything that can absorb water and keep it high on your head or arm to get the best reception.

Thanks for posting the link yoyo, it would be nice if they checked the tracks before they posted them, Antoines last run shows 67 knot peaks! It seems the french like to do things their own way and have their own speed ranking system in place; just as the Aussies do with the speed challenge. It makes sense really, that way they can cater to the needs of speedsailors in their own country. I'm not sure it's gamesmanship on Antoines part as he seems happy to share them and have them posted on the french site. I think as the gps system gets more serious the tracks should be posted for everyone to see, Mal has some of them on his site. There is a lot to be learnt from analysing the data.

Not sure about that... for us...

The various speed competitions (generally) post independent results simply because there is a single organsier collecting results - ofteny because there isn't any internet access at most speed-sailing locations.

Alternatively, the team challenge is a "team challenge" - individual ranking is available, but only as a side effect of having the data; individual ranking is still recommended to use GPSSS.

I think you'll find the team challenge is catering for the needs of Aussie speedsailors, that's why it's been so popular and successful.....long may it continue. Running an international competition makes it very difficult to look after the needs of every country, you can provide guidleines but inevitably something gets lost in the translation. Lots of countries have their own posting sites, just as quite a few manufacturers run speed contests. If sailors choose to post on GPSSS that's fine, but at least there is lots of choice out there, something that was missing only a few short years ago.
