Over the last few seasons there have been a fair few conversations about the fastest NM runs in open water (as appose to flat fast conditions). Leighton Beach for the Perth based guys and Safety Bay/Warnbro Sound further south have been the two locations I've heard about.

At the start of this season I began thinking about running an actual 'Safety Bay Naughty' event. Having, nearly immediately run into hurdles (council permits, WWA comity meeting falling on my rostered days on & calendar already being semi decided), I've gone back to the drawing board.

I hijacked a conversation on one of the pinna's sessions earlier this week about PB's & bragging rights to the fastest NM at leighton. This tied in with my Safety Bay NM idea and got me thinking again.

A few ideas were put forward about having a facebook page that we could visit and post links to sessions from KA72. This would give a uniform, open and easy way of recording results. This coupled with a running table of the current year and all time standings, would I think, create a good gauge and slightly competitive edge.

I'm hunting for ideas and suggestions. Possible boundaries/ rules.

You could easily have a Google Drive Doc open to a few people to be able to edit or anyone for the table.

You could have different sheets for different locations and an overall within the same doc (see tabs at the bottom)
Safety bay needs a defined area. My 30+ was including the bar which is far from open water compared to Leighton. Perhaps only outside the sand bars?

I think the SB NM should definitely not include the bar (as Mark suggests) - then in my experience the difficulty of achieving a quick NM is about equivalent with Leighton.

It would be good if a NM at either spot could be posted to the "The Open Ocean NM Table"

I think the Google Doc limits the interaction. With facebook there is the opportunity for people to comment and interact more freely. Everyone has ownership, not just a limited number of people.

I totally agree with the beaver bar and even possibly the run from 'pengo's' to the bar not being included. I was considering making it in the sound it's self, (totally taking out all the smooth water).

As for comparing Leighton and Safety Bay?!?!? I personally haven't sailed at Leighton, so can't really judge. Are they very similar? I plan on making the trip very soon to have a go.

Having the 2 or more locations on separate lists might inspire people to make the journey (more interaction between people from different sailing locations).

Possibly run a table for each location. Then if someone sails Leighton, Safety Bay and spot ..... We could than average their speed between all 3 to give a score for the WA Open Ocean Naughty Title. This would give people a reason to record runs at each location, but if they wish to just sail one or the other, they are still on record.

Leighton is for the purist - there is no reef, no sand bar, no weedy hairy beavery bits.

I'm getting the impression that you like Leighton Chris?!? BUT I'm trying to include as many people as possible. There are people that for whatever reason don't venture too far from their local, possibly fear of driving through Rockingham, which at times is justified.

As above, if we run 2 tables, Safety Bay and Leighton, we have two individual divisions. Then averaged speeds between the two will give us the open water WA title. As interest grows (hopefully), we maybe able to add some more locations and even divisions (10sec open water or on a board larger than 70W etc). Who knows where it might end up.

Safety Bay is a bit harder to police, to keep it open water, but it gives a down south option for those that won't travel to Leighton. Possibly a Google earth track can be overlay-ed onto the Ka72 track to make sure it's within the guidelines.

I'm just trying to get it started, knowing full well it won't suit all, but hopefully get as many people involved as possible.

I've been having a bit of a play with facebook and google doc Lao. It's looking like a combination of the two may work well.

I've also run into some teething problems with Safety Bay NM. By running Ka72, can we view multiple NM (I havent used the site much). Say for example I sail 50km in Safety Bay. There will be multiple NM, high probability that there will be faster NM leaving the pond or making your way up wind. How do we then display only the open water one? Realseed you could differentiate, but if you don't have realspeed it will cause confusion.

Leighton you won't have this problem (as Chris said, no reef/sandbars). Pure open water location.

Someone with a higher level of technical knowledge of these programes have any suggestion????

Unfortunately I think banning the bar at Safety Bay would be too hard to police. Although you can finish a good naughty off with a run down the bar you have to go across the spit and through the washing machine to get to it, with the movement of the sand over this last winter I think this phase of the run is even longer than in the past.
Having done quite a few Safety Bay miles my best is still and open water one initiated when I was trying to sail to Port Kennedy but saw a very ominous shadow underwater in front of me so initiated a big bear away and a GTFOOH run to the sound (i will let you work that one out)

What you need to do is revise the idea of Latitude racing. That would most likely level the playing field and exclude convenient bars. Race between whole minutes of latitude. Should be an easy thing for gps programmers to incorporate.

If everyone is happy to include the bar that's fine with me. With the amount of traffic on it on a summers afternoon it will be as bigger hazard as an advantage.

Great Idea. I've managed 29 in Jervis Bay, NSW in a 25knot seabreeze, Koncept 6.4, CA SL55, KA Symmy 23. That was 8km downwind of land with boom high chop. I think the best way to classify it is a minimum distance downwind from land, say something like 5km.

BTW Jervis is an interesting place to sail, with the strongest most consistent seabreeze on the east coast. Feels like a tradewind with almost no gustiness. Two or three consecutive days of 25-35 knot seabreezes happens several times during a good summer, and the wind can blow all through the night, moderating to 20knots at dawn and quickly building with sunrise. This is a vid of me in 20 knots at 11am cruising with the 6.4. Got to 30 by 3pm and I was sailing with a 5.0 Koncept. Fun place, nice rolling ramps too.

There should be a few reasonable NM from yesterday, a few guys were pretty quick even though the wind was light.
