WA Surf in Safety Bay have them. I bought one off them this time last year and I noticed recently that they had one sitting there.

surf sail Australia had them last time I was there.
2nd wind may also have them.

Bender, make sure that you update the firmware to prevent possible freezing (also has the benefit of the clearer font for us older folk!)

Have a look under rules Nebs:

"Technical Advisers for the challenge will be as follows: Roo (NAVi GPS) Sailquik (General) and Slowboat (General).

The following GPS's are considered valid for the purposes of the challenge (most preferable at the top, least preferable at the bottom):

NAVI GT-35 (uses 0.2 sec recording intervals which is approved for this Challenge)
NAVI GT-31 (uses 1 sec recording intervals)
NAVI GT-11 (uses 1 sec recording intervals)
Garmin Foretrex Series
Garmin Gecko Series
Garmin Edge (1 second setting)

GT-35 was a limited production (maybe 6 made?) engineering sample made by Locosys at Tom Chalko's request for testing a 5hz MTK chip. It contained both the MTK chip (5hz) and the standard Sirf3 chip (1 hz). It did not make it into production and is not available.

Not sure if that is an evil gloat (I have one) or a cry?

In any case, it was not an advantage. The MTK chip does not give binary data or accuracy data.

On the other hand, there is a Ublox chip that is good for 10hz and DOES produce binary data that includes accuracy data. Manfred's GPS-Results software can already read the format to produce results. It would be perfect for us right now but Locosys are not interested in even making some prototypes.

Now that is worth and anguished cry!

I really have no idea about next generation units. As I said, we asked Locosys to put the Ublox chip in the GT-** but they declined. Hoping someone will do it soon.....

however is there other brands out there that do the job and are there any that are more slim lined?

I am interested in purchasing one but would like some options for my money.

The simple answer is unfortunately no. The GT-31 is far and away the best available GPS for speed sailing by a long way.
There are some very promising backyard projects around that use the power of the Ublox 10hz chip, but I doubt that will be in production anytime soon. I would be very happy to hear otherwise. Roo....?

Sailquik, what module has a 10hz update? The data sheets suggest, the ones I can find anyway, that they are 5hz.

We've had 10 Hz GPS systems since 2007 but as Daffy says they are backyard systems that are not approved for speedsailing. They are very accurate and produce the binary data we need but I haven't had the time nor inclination to pursue the project as the GT-11/31 was the primary focus. They are a true 3D GPS system that works just as well on the water or on land. They use the U-Blox Antaris 4 chipset which is switchable for different output rates. I can post some data if anyone really wants to see it but pretty boring stuff. The Alphas are a bit more accurate though.

An update for those who are interested. I got a reply from a U-Blox technician informing me that:

1. Ublox4 or the Antaris4 series, can output 10Hz but only in RAW data format and this is only available in the LEA-4T which is a module.

2. Ublox6 can only do up to a maximum of 5hz in chip or module form.

The technician confirmed that by RAW output he means the ublox binary format.

So it appears that Antaris4 10hz output of this type is not 'interpolated'. I guess I will have to reconfigure the G-Rays1 and do some more tests. :-)

Yoyo be careful what binary messages you record at 10 hz, get the wrong ones and it overloads the system causing it to take a time out. Certain messages can be recorded at 1Hz to as the data isn't needed for speed measurement. You'll have to reconfig the system after some testing to get a consistent data stream.
