Some awesome news to hand is that brad has cracked the australian nautical mile record at the burrum heads speed strip.

A big congrats to brad for an awesome effort averaging 38.15kn over 1 nautical mile. as well as being the fastest over the nm in australia brad has also nabbed the $1000 prize that was up for grabs from elders burrum heads for the burrum windfest. great timing as this years competition is in 4 weeks time.

again brad a very big congratulations to you! well done!

If you use the search page (www.ka72.com/Search) to search for downloadable tracks from Burrum Heads, it is second from the top. Click the download button.

FWIW, I've checked the file in KA72 and RealSpeed and (an older copy of) GPSResults. The closest on most measures was GPSResults. Looks like a little shopping around to get the best results, though the difference for the most part is around .02 of a knot.

As a side-comment (and not to single out Brad as I know a lot of sailors shop around their files in different software and are perfectly entitled to do so) I would be very interested to understand where the difference in speeds comes from. I'm pretty sure that my algorithms are as accurate as they can be with the data I've got, but when another program consistently rates tracks as slightly faster than mine does, that makes me suspicious.

Anyway, congratulations to Brad, even if the NM calc is out a little bit, it doesn't make enough of a difference to challenge the result. Vindication for us Qlders that Burrum is definately the spot for NM speeds in Australia!

Just downloaded Brad's file from Dylan's site and one thing immediately comes to mind...............................God I wish this was my session

It a shame Brad didn't have slightly better entry and exit speeds as his speed was very consistant for 90% of the run, so it could have been a mid to high 38 run. Awesome effort. All Brad's 5x10sec were done on a starboard tack right at the top of the course whereas the Nm was on a port tack right down at the other end. Goes to show Burrum works beautifully both ways.

PS - Realspeed gives a nm speed of 38.137 kn.

Hi Guys, to evaluate my tracks i use GPS Results V 5.49 & also always upload my track to Dylan's site as well. On days when time poor i use the KA72 integration to post to GPSTC. I've also found the difference between the 2 programs to be less than .02 & not always in GPS Results favour.

This does raise an old debate. Should all record tracks be put through the same software?
Personally i think Dylan's software is world class & it should be compulsory to use this program when posting to GPSTC. I think there are enough variables in our sport & plenty of them out of our control. This is one area where we can improve the site.

they are or where self appointed as far as i am aware?
as far as i am concerned the gtc IS the 'official' australian body

The fact that GPSSS require 2 GPS units for a record is probably enough to make them more 'official recorder' than GPSTC which is more of a fun deal?

here is the all time gtc Australian (sailor) nmile rankings.

Here's a comparison I did on Brad's file using Realspeed, KA72, and version 5 and 6 of GPSResults. The leftmost column is the speeds recorded at GTC. None of these results is vastly out of range of the others, but there are clear variations.

I'd particularly draw your attention to the results for NM in GPSResults 5, which is higher than the other packages. The 1Hr result is also interesting, showing every package except GPSResults 6 as about the same.

I would suggest that GTC requests GPSResults users to upgrade to the newer version 6, as it looks as though it is more accurate overall.



It also looks as though Brad may have miskeyed his 1Hr result at GTC. Not that it affects anything, not a PB. Human error I guess.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound disparaging about GPSTC......great site and I'm with you mate, as far as the 'fun' sailing goes.
The other site seems far more record focussed and some of those boys sound deadly serious.
