As if Goolwa wasn't enough..

This spot used to be good yoyo, but has deteriorated over the past 10 years or so.

Quite shallow water either side of the spit, and the chop builds up quickly when you get out a bit.

We still have regular trips / events to Lake George these days - excellent spot to camp out and sail on either side of the spit....

it would be nice to see that much water back in the lake !

Here are some photos of the glassy water south of the spit in a southerly! It was blowing 15-20 and I was on an old 5.5 & Strapper 275.
Shot on a disposable waterproof camera in the early 90's.

They are the strangest flatwater sailing photos I've seen for some time. The water looks like it's got a film of oil on top. I mean NO RIPLLES AT ALL! Surreal.

There is nothing to match that experience. It was like waterskiing on a glassy morning outside of the wake and without a boat!
The salinity was always really high causing the foam slick, the glass may have been due to the weed a foot below the surface and maybe gasses that were being released? Have any others who experienced this phenomena got any explanations?

it was an amazing experience sailing on the mirror surface of the lake!
shame it went dry in the late 90's and all the weed died.
now the water level it's too low for good sailing but water in flows this year may bring it back up enough to make it worth the trip.

I remember those days well, we had them conditions for a quite a few years, yes there was weed beds about a foot under and they rose to the top as the sun got stronger but on cloudy days it was sweet as. the water was also quite warm and always sucked the seabreeze 8 to 10 knots more than on the beach a few ky's away. I should also be able to find some old photo's of when all the crew here had 12 to 14 inch speed boards and the old neilpryde speed sails with 6 cams and 8 battens even on the 3.5's. the lake is only getting sea water at the moment but is still twice as salty as the sea. Can't see it ever getting back to them glory days. the bloody goverment is looking to divert the fresh water that normally flows to lake george to the sothern end of the coorong instead. just lucky we have a a good winter run of high tides and big swells to freshen it up.

Yoyo, Lake George is a 400km drive from Adelaide, I'm sure my mate Danny still has a few of them old speed sails, I will try to get a photo after I finish night shift.

far out glassy water and planing does not happen too offen
