Waricle has given me an interesting challenge, convert a free style board into a speed board.

It will be a big complicated job, so it's likely to keep me amused for quite a while.

2 things needed, convert the 12mm rocker at the tail to 2mm, and as the current powerbox will then be buried 10mm, might as change that to tuttle so all Peter's fins will fit.

I'll have to go through my scrap foam in the workshop to work out the best way to do this. I won't interfere with the existing bottom, just build up on top of it.

Thanks berowne, I hadn't thought about esky foam, it's probably dense enough to just glass over without sandwiching.
But I have lots of offcuts and no esky, so I'll probably use what I have.

Unless Waricle donates the esky!

What's the motivation to do that Decrepit ?. Will this board be used with inside straps ?

John, not my idea it's Peter's, I'm just interested in the process.
I think it will fit inbetween a couple of his existing boards.

Alby, the ally coated one would be impossible, the other foam is a bit heavy, looks like 36kg/m^3.

Absolutely go for it , need detailed info and pics Got to love a experimental project. For inspiration, not too long ago I made a medium sized freeride board for myself with cutouts . For a strong deck , I used a funky cross weave glass ( kinda like normal weave with added 45 deg added in ). Not heavy on paper , but thick. So for hand lam added half a bucket of resin. The bottom was normal construction. It went well , but too much is too much. So......I ripped the concrete deck off , like Hannibal Lecter did to his victims faces. Out came the mast track. From the bottom, with a jigsaw, took off 50mm each side and 25mm from the back. Re tucked the rails and made a proper deck. Fin box and foot plugs stayed in place. Ps., the planer made a lot of noise tucking the bottom rails. Going over the plugs was biblical. So , in the end , I ended up with a board with smaller cutouts , less rocker , thinner , narrower , straps further back and a true sinker to my crotch. It's the fastest board I've ever ridden despite all its botchiness , bogging and self shame of the monster I created. So.... **** it , give it a whack.
Ps could you move the whole thing forward , if your going to rip the box out and downsize anyways ?

A consult with Peter I think.
Like me he'll be using weedies of some description most of the time, moving the box forward makes sense.

Peter still has the board, he's removing back straps and pad, so need to ask him for photos of the before situation.

You've all confused me. Where is the free style board ?. Is the Carbon Art board in the pictures above the board being modified ?

If you don't have a definitive flat spot , it's hard to tell how much rear focker there really is. It's easy to fudge either way. If it's a continuous curve where do you measure from ? 12mm rocker sounds like a surfboard to me. A fast rocker needs at least 80 cm of flat with your 2mm rocker. We're going to need mote bog.

The carbon art is to be modified. The mistral is the reference.

The straight edge should be touching 1m from the back, I consider that to be tail rocker. That is what Peter says he's done, to measure both boards.

I'll be adding foam to the tail for the extra build up, otherwise it add too much weight.

Ok got ya. I've been mucking around with a FSW board (with in side straps), speed fins and cross over sails for 5 years now in choppy locations, with fairly good results (compared to if I had a slalom board). So, I'm very interested in seeing your result.

Hopefully this board will mainly be used in flat conditions. The Mistral is working well for Waricle where we mainly sail, so using it's rocker line makes sense.

Why not slap on 10mm pvc then sand it down to blend in? Weight won't be too bad

Yes, would work well, but I don't have 10mm PVC, I only have 3 mm, could use a graduated multiple thickness of that I guess. But waricle says he has some high density styrene. I'll see what happens when it's in the workshop.

Peter has taken the pics today, we've added 15mm of esky foam to the tail.
It doesn't go all the way forward to the zero point, so we've cut some off cuts I had about 5mm thick to do the rest.
Going to be a fair amount of fairing in. No idea what it will look like when we finish, but I have my fingers crossed!

Mark has supplied a standard Tuttle box, removed from a Tabou I believe, for a foil conversion. Should fill the huge hole we made taking the power box out.

4th pic, esky foam hotwired out ready for gluing. Old Power Box fin removed. I think as this hole is a bit irregular, it will be easier to fill with expanding foam and cut a new hole for the new tuttle box.

I've had a go at turning Pete's pics up the right way.

As it's going over rocker and "V" I've used an old foam mattress to conform to the board's contours, that gives an even pressure over the foam.

And here's the foam nicely stuck.


I've since shaped this, removed the "V" brought the leading edge down to the existing bottom, straightened the rocker and added 3mm tail rocker and slight V behind the back strap.

Not sure about the next step. Anybody used melamine? I have enough to cover this, but somehow it doesn't feel right.
The board still has it's original integrity, so I only need to make the surface hard enough to resist dents.

Fairly self explanatory, last couple of pics show a q cell filler layer and the small white dots in the middle are my gorilla finger tip dents in the foam. How embarrassment!!
