I agree the cost of entry into the sport is high. It can be anywhare from $4000 to +$10,000 for a 2 board, 3 sail setup for gps sailing. But given the $300 cost of the GPS is less than 8% of the lower end of the setup costs, it is not the barrier you suggest it is.
It's easy to spend $10,000+, but $4000 seems a bit on the high side. I paid around $500 each for my first two speedsailing boards; $250-300 each for the first two or three sails; and used booms and masts I already had. On a limited budget, the $250 for a watch would have to compete with a "new" used sail or mast.
On the German forum, the overwhelming response to the Motion GPS that sells for 300 Euros was "too expensive". Germany is also the only country I know of that has at least two speed competitions where GPS data from phones are allowed.
