What PFD's are speed and marathon sailors using?
I was looking at the Ledgen to Lancelin website and trying to work out what type of PFD's they allow. They specify the AS1499 which seems to be a type 2 pfd and an AS2350 which I can't seem to be able to find any info on. This is then followed by saying 'or a type 1 or type 2'. By the way this reads to me you would think an AS1499 is a type 2 (which I think is correct) and an AS2350 is a type 1, but every type 1 pfd I've looked at is an AS1512.
Any clarification on this would be great.

My understanding is that type two is the minimum specification required for offshore sailboard races [organised events] in western australia.
Type one provides greater floatation and as such is also accepted in these races - I thing type one have the full collar to keep ya noggin above water if you pass out!!

Edit

Just googled the AS numbers
1499 is the type 2 'bouyancy vest'
1512 is the type 1 'life jacket'

I think someone is taking the piss with the AS 2350
Google came up with - "AS 2350 (Lst)
Methods of testing portland and blended cements"

Mafia floatation!!!!

Just a note on actually getting approved at the LOC...

The lovely ladies who do the approvals are members of the chamber of commerce, and haven't really been on the water all that much... Last race I had to convince them that we didn't need a Type 3 jacket (which is little more than a wetsuit top), and my type 2 would be fine.

From past races if you turn up with something that sort of looks a bit like a flotation device you'll be fine
