Thanks for the promo Bondy! Yes it's my ad, can't in good conscience sell to a learner and anyone who know anything about windsurfing wont wanna sail it, taking the makita to it on the weekend to get creative. Still trying to come up with something unique as a tribute to our windsurfing past.

as a by note, I actually made a hump board back in the very early 80's kinda similar to the hot buttered one above (without the swallow tail) will try to dig out the proud photo!

only problem with the bombys was that they were too damned heavy, customs flew past em all the time!

It seems a shame to take the Makita to it, Alby.
I think that cleaned up, it would look good suspended from the ceiling inside a windsurfing shop, as you say paying tribute to our windsurfing past.
I've got an old Z-Boom that could hang with it

Ian K, Yes I think they are both 1980s adverts with the Dufour being more about partial nudity of a participant in the sport with the Hifly one being a lot darker, more smutty and controversial. I think there was a buxom, leggy "German" hooker in the Hifly advert with some wording about dialing her hot number, but I really can't be entirely sure as I threw out my Freesail magazines over 25 years ago. I don't have the Hifly advert just my recollection of it and some fleeting memory of mailed complaints about it in the Freesail magazine. Phil Lynch and Herb Ypma (Mistral and Hifly Brand Manager Windsurfer marketing) were probably involved in the running of one or even both the campaigns unless they predated their tenure. Here is the Dufour advert. I don't believe these adverts both of which were risque (omitting the accent helps complete the word on this site) would be run today, but I might be wrong.

This one was seen around Monavale, a few times last year.

the Dufour advert earlier stated the sail was "easy to pull from the water"
i cannot imagine too many women were able to uphaul those sac o' potatoes !!

I never remember my Dufour Sun being "Sporty"!!!!
Rugged yes , that's cos it weigh 1000kg when wet. Bring back the old adds but lets keep the old gear off the water

Yes.The best board of the early 1980s was the stock windsurfer which with its California inspired surfboard lines was also much more manoeuvreable than the Dufour. The new Windsurfer LT follows the shape which is a classic. Here is a photo taken by Craig Peterson of the 1984 worlds on the Swan River in Perth.

I think yes you are right in about 1980-81 these were high end.

Here is a photo of Peter Cabrinha in 1980 or so riding a state of the art Windsurfer Rocket proto complete with twin fins, storm surf daggerboard, multiple footstraps and "extra thermo-induced" rocker.

Here is a sample of a photo of a Bombora pig "raceboard" showing lineage with the dromedary from the RipCurl Wave Classic, Torquay in around 1983. The Mark Paul designed and built board (probably home made) is held by Hawaiian stars Suzan Gedayloo and Dana Dawes. I think the board dates from much earlier and was a radical raceboard which worked best in higher winds than the typical race boards used by Naish, Winner and others. I recall Mark Paul's (or possibly Mike Maguire's but can't be sure) board was considered quick on reaching legs compared to the other longer race boards back in the 1979-80-81 Pan Am cups but he was unable to maintain speed around the courses, particularly upwind or in light winds of Kailua where the event was held. There are some articles in Australian Sailing from the early 79-80-81 which contained regular reports on the Pan Am Cup and race breakdown reports of the Bombora Sailboards Australia team of Maguire, Johns, Kelly, O'Connor and Paul. Note the almost formula like width. If anyone has any of those magazines still please post extracts as there are none available anymore.

Bombora New Toy pretty advanced production polyethylene/polyurethane sinker for September-October 1983 release.
It used to fall apart particularly in the finbox which would roll out. However it loved to jump, compared to converted surfboards and stock windsurfer and some early customs and was a lot of fun for one season.

Have some of the magazine reports from the Pan Am cup at home. One I think may have been out of Modern Boating and the others are in the old Windsurfer class news letter booklets we used to get back then.

Brilliant. Also any reports of the Craven Special Mild Surf series in Sydney in early 80s or other.
