What do you guys do when a perfectly good boom loses a bit of its grip . Can it be replaced. I tried electrical tape and that DOESNT work.

I've used bicycle inner tube in the past. Got a fat tube from the bike shop dumpster.
Cut a short length and slipped/stretched it over the bit of the clamp that hinges around the back. That's where the outhaul pressure bears.
Lasted about 3 years.

Umteen years ago I went to a sports shop and got a roll of tennis racquet handle grip, cloth type, that long ago I cant remember how successful it was. Have used the bandage tape on sticky rubber handle bar grips on a bike, didn't work that well kept lifting from the end and left a sticky residue where it had lifted from.

There is a silicon tape you can get from Bunnings called Tommy Tape. Comes in various colours. It only sticks to itself but bonds almost instantly at the overlap. You can spiral wrap a bit over the affected area. Also work brilliantly at the ends of the boom grip to stop it peeling off.

Replace the bad section with foam from an old fin cover. Us contact adhesive or superglue. Sand smooth.

Easiest fix, still run into windsurfers who'v been sailing 30 years who'v never thought of it.

I love the idea but isn't it too thick? Or do you sand it after?

Argh! I thought you were talking about a slipping clamp. Forget about the inner tube. Buy an EVA regrip roll and some contact adhesive.

First you have to strip the remnants of the existing grip off the boom. The easy way to do that is put the arms in a polythene garbage bag with a half a cup of acetone and leave it in the sun. You should nick holes in the EVA here and there to let the fumes through but try not to breathe that stuff. The grip should just about fall off.

The replacement is as per the video, but you don't need that roller thing. The only caution is that you have to set things up so you can work fast because the contact adhesive has to be given time to flash off but not more than about 20 or 30 minutes before sticking it together. You cut the excess off after gluing with a craft knife and then sand it smooth.

regripping a boom is very satisfying, and the new grip lasts for years. You don't need to be a professional to do it. I did my boom and about 4 years later it is still going strong.
Getting the old grip off is the hardest part, but the acetone trick looks like it makes that easy.
