I have just broken my 3rd boge joint in 12 months after not ever having broken one in 20 odd years of sailing (I have replaced a few though).
I wonder what is the consensus, what is more durable a tendon or a power (boge) joint or is it pot luck?
I reckon tendons
- the material is just more dense
- there is no issue with swelling on inserts (in a Boge if the bolt corrodes and swells)
- the wide fabric strap on a Boge obscures some of it so harder to see cracks - plus is weaker than a couple of bits of downhaul rope as used for tendon systems
- tendons are usually easier to replace - if a boge bolt locks up it is hard to get tools into
I have had tendons last over 3 years, never snapped one.
