Had a session on a poorly rigged 6.7 Severne Overdrive, needed more downhaul but ideally a smaller size race sail would have suited given what everyone else was on. My other option would have been a 6.5 Severne NCXpro that I know from previous sail at that flat water location is a good combo paired with my 108 Fanatic Hawk in 18-23kn. The pre rigging dilemma was which sail to rig that day that I could detune the most as conditions changed from a 20-25 knots to a 25-30 knot forecast as the day went on.

Should have been a more enjoyable and longer session if the 6.7 was rigged correctly but still have the question in the back of my head as to which one of those 2 sails given there similar size could be detuned the most in overpowered conditions?

The answer will help me determine weather or not I start looking for a 5.5-6 mtr cammed race sail or give that location a miss when its forecast to be 25+

You should be able to tune the 6.7 sufficiently up to 25kn. Anything over you should be looking at something around 5.5 - 5.8.
I recently borrowed a 5.5 in 25kn and was quite comfy. Most other guys we're on 5.8's or 6's pulling 40kn.

Think I've covered that, the question remains as to which of those 2 sail mentioned would be able to be detuned the most 6.7 being 3 cam and 6.5 no cam.

Usually the camed sail will have the best stability ..being able to take more down haul and made for overpowered conditions .
but no cams are getting better ..tough question ..but I'd stick with the cam answer .

25 to 30 on a 6.7 your dreaming or have a crap wind gauge.....myself i can't even hold onto a 5.8 and would be on my 4.9 and that's race sails.....just easier to go out on wave gear and have a good time...

^^ yes and no, seen Bjorn do a 7.5 or 8m in 23-25kn - and that was open ocean with head hi chop / swell. Nuts.

Go the 6.7. In flat water, 30kts should be fine. The board will be your limiting factor as it will try and fly. For me 6.6 on a 87lt board in 30kts is a fun day out..... On flat water only. Yesterday was one such day

I find detuning the race sail counterproductive. (Reflex) At most I will put an extra cm downual, but usually I don't as I don't like how it effects rotation. I use an adjustable outhual, I flatten it for upwind, but usually 'let it out a bit downwind even when over powered. Basically I find that I prefer stability, which you give up if you overdo "detuning". If possible avoid a beam reach. Given the two sails I would choose the 6.7 as more stable, but harder to gybe.

No probs..I would invest in a. 5 .5 metre ..a 25+ day ..it's the best with a small rig ..I would prefer to use a bellied up 5.5 to a max down hauled 6.7.
if it gets lumpy ..which happens in the ocean ..the race sail will drive you into the swell rather than ride over it ..you need control,no speed out there
flat water ...totally different story, go as big as you can handle ...it's a blast .
