I've got a small c 8mm diameter punched hole in the bottom of my board. Don't know how it happened as I'm very careful with it.Looks like it was dropped onto a small rock or a nail head..grr
I was desperate for a sail today and only found the hole as I was about to go out. I put multiple layers of nail varnish on it to make it watertight ( I hope) and sailed.
Can I use acetone to remove the nail varnish? I was going to get it professionally repaired - it's a pretty board....Any good board repairers around Lake Macquarie Newcastle? The bottom is white - it's a pro model Exocet Xcross 115ltres

If I can't find someone to repair it or want to do a temporary repair to sail Fri whats the surfboard ding fix stuff like? ( I have some).

Sue, try Solarez. Straight out of the tube, whack some clear sticky tape on and in fixed in 5 minutes.

Don't use acetone at all. I'll be surprised if the vapour from the varnish has not dissolved some of the foam underneath but hopefully it was not cracked through to the core and you will be fine. Ka43's solution is your safest bet till you find someone

Nail varnish!!! That is some toxic schit! Ever noticed that stuff smells like automotive thinners? There's a reason for it.
That stuff will dissolve your board no worries. Imagine what it's doing to your fingers.

I always keep this stuff handy in my bag.



15 minute fix.

Epoxy solarez like the other fella mentioned. Get it from any surf shop, just put it on in the shade then put it in the sun to dry.

I will be back in the Newi area soon, might be doing some small repairs when I get somewhere with room to get messy.

I've found a good trick is to firmly place glad wrap over the solarez to get it to fill the space and to finish smoothly so you have less sanding to do. it makes for a nicer finish.

I've not needed to redo a solarez repair. it's saved me hundreds in repairs and gets you back on the water within 5 minutes.

Thanks. Will have to find a local surf shop or wait until next time in Newcastle.. MM might order some online. Would a marine shop stock it?
We have flow coat for the boat is that similar?
In the meantime how do I remove the nail varnish? Hopefully it hasn't got to the foam..it was a small coin shaped depression deeper at one side and cracked that side.
I only use the nail varnish for board emergencies..previously only for minor nose cracks.
Like the get back in the water in 5 mins!

Thanks Adam - I actually bought my ding stick from them but it was so long ago I had forgotten! Will have to chase them . The hardest thing will be parting with the board for any length of time as it's my 'formula ' board substitute and with the wind / lack of we have at the moment it will be my go to board..
In the meantime should I sand out the nailpolish area and fill it with something else..

+1. Definitely Solarez from any surfing shop. Apply a small amount (just enough to fill the 8mm hole) and put a piece of gladwrap on top... use your finger to smooth it out, as suggested by Geestalt, and you probably won't even need to sand it. The gladwrap is a great trick to get a smooth finish first time.

Ok local shop ( Cessnock) has uv solarcure resin.. sounds like a similar thing to Solarez. Put on hardens in 3 mins then sand..?

So long as it is epoxy and not polyester then any make of solar cure resin is OK.

What colour nail polish ? Goth black or prossie red ?

I know everyone will disagree with me, but since no-one has any idea - then depending on what the nail polish is like I would use nail polish remover.

Yes, it will eat the foam, but put a little (a very little) on a soft rag (just to make the rag slightly damp, not so you could squeeze it out) and wipe away on a hot windy day and the nail polish remover should evaporate before it eats any foam. It will only really do damage if you pour it onto the board or if you wipe the foam directly with a wet rag. It is pretty aggressive though, it will attack foam fast so be careful.

All you need to do is remove the colour. If it was clear nail polish then I would just solarez over the top using cling film as above. Solarez repairs can look pretty good if you polish them up nicely. If you make a hash then put a sticker over the top when it is water tight.

You can mix micro-balloons into the solar resin and it makes it white, but a well polished clear repair looks better I reckon.

Please stop with the nail polish and nail polish remover ideas. That stuff is for putting on chicks nails, NOT REPAIRING BOARDS !!!!
You might not get it on the foam but if you do you will cause major damage. You're much better off not taking the risk.
If you need to get nail polish off your board scrape it off or sand it off. You can then wet and dry it.

It is not structural at that tiny size. Use epoxy Solarez as suggested above, but yes if you completely filled the thing with nail polish it would be worth sanding most of it out first. Do it in the shade (your own shadow is fine) then leave in the sun for 5mins. Done.

Like Hoops said forget the nail polish, the fumes alone can melt your board core. I always knew that fibreglass fillers could damage epoxy boards on contact but I was amazed when I saw what just the solvent fumes can do. I cut open a board once and the filler had been nowhere near the foam in the board but it had melted it back for a couple of inches. A void like that will be structural

I use solarez for temporary repairs but I don't find that it makes a good bond with the board. When I get home I just scrape or peel it off. Do you sand the area first before applying the solarez.

Good tip with the cling film, as it always ends up crusty.

Thanks everyone. Got some Uv solar resin and used cling wrap and done a good job. Bit hard to find some sun to set it in at the moment though or any wind..
