just my own 2 cents here - if you are using a camless sail (wave sail or the like), generally, if any more than approx 15cm of the sail panel touches the boom when planing, the sail will start to become inefficient. it will feel powerful but it will begin to pull you downwind, rather than propelling the board forward across the wind.
generally (for most sails); a flatter sail (more out-haul) will allow you to point further upwind, but not deliver as much power when heading off the wind, and vise versa
