does more or less outhaul make it easer to get planing

In most cases less outhaul will give you a bit more power and it will move the draft back in your sail. i use an adjustable OH to get more power and help to get on the plane in marginal winds.

just my own 2 cents here - if you are using a camless sail (wave sail or the like), generally, if any more than approx 15cm of the sail panel touches the boom when planing, the sail will start to become inefficient. it will feel powerful but it will begin to pull you downwind, rather than propelling the board forward across the wind.

generally (for most sails); a flatter sail (more out-haul) will allow you to point further upwind, but not deliver as much power when heading off the wind, and vise versa

stick close to the settings recommended on the sail. planing depends on other factors such as where your feet are on the board/wind strength/sail size etc etc.

for sydney's (mostly) gusty wind most people rig 1/2 metre up at least.

crudely - more outhaul = flatter sail = less power (although more control)

Yes agreed.
Less outhaul for most sails means 1-2cm less.

On a camless sail it is better to have to pump onto the plane and still be able to sail with an efficient foil (ie upwind ability) than to bag it out heaps so you can plane easily but then it just feels crap and won't go upwind as the foil (COE) is moving
